Field Hockey Drops 5-0 Decision to Drew

Box Score

MADISON, NJ (September 17, 2010) – In a sport where a tenacious defense and midfield game can create havoc on offensive production, the Drew University field hockey team limited Vassar to five shots – only three of which were on goal – and got a four-goal performance from senior midfielder Kati Eggert in defeating the Brewers 5-0 Friday afternoon in non-league action.

With the loss, the Brewers fall to 2-3 on the season and will next travel to Western Connecticut on Tuesday, September 21 for a 6:00 p.m. game. Drew improves to 4-1 and will be at Swarthmore this Sunday for a 4:00 p.m. contest.

Eggert scored three of her four goals in the final 18 minutes of the second half – two of which came within 51 seconds of one another – to extend a 2-0 lead into a comfortable 5-0 margin.

The Brewers managed five shots in the contest – four coming in the second half – but could only force Drew freshman goalie Christiana Carlini into three saves.

The Rangers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Eggert notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season just 5:19 in the first half, coming off a penalty corner. Drew's goal came just five seconds after Vassar senior goalie Rachel Horwitz made her first save of the game off a shot from Drew junior forward Meghan Howlett.

The first half ended with Vassar down 1-0 and despite a lack of offensive production, very much in the mix. Howlett got into the scoring column just 1:12 into the second half extending Drew's lead to 2-0.

The Rangers added three back-breaking goals in the game's final 18 minutes to increase their lead to 4-0. The trio of goals came in a seven minute span, all coming off the stick of Eggert.

Eggert tallied her second goal of the game off Horwitz with just under 18 minutes to play and then quickly added goals three and four in the span of 51 seconds.

Drew had 17 shots, with Horwitz making eight saves and allowing four of the five goals. Freshman Maggie Brelis allowed Drew's last tally in the final six minutes of the game. The Brewers held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners, but were unable to convert on those opportunities.
