SCHENECTADY, NY (May 9, 2010) – A day after dropping two one-run games, the Vassar College baseball team rebounded and finished its season on a high note with a Liberty League doubleheader sweep of Union College on Sunday at Central Park with 14-9 and 8-2 wins.

With the program's first ever league doubleheader sweep, the Brewers conclude the season 10-27, 5-19 in the league, the most overall wins since 2005 and tied for the most ever league wins in program history. The Dutchmen end their season with a 12-30, 4-20 record.

Vassar stole a total of 18 bases on the day to set the single season record with 111 stolen bases. Additionally, freshman shortstop Mike Perrone had six hits to break the single season record for hits. Perrone concluded the season with 66 hits, surpassing the mark of 64 set by Kristaps Aldins in 2005 when he was named the Liberty League Player of the Year. Perrone also finished third in single season steals after nabbing seven bases on Sunday – five in the second game alone – to conclude the season with 36 steals. He also capped the season with an impressive .434 batting average, the second highest single season mark.

Game One
The Brewers scored seven runs in the first inning to break open the first game and added another four in the fourth to take an 11-1 lead – an important cushion after the Dutchmen plated seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Vassar scored its seven runs in the first inning with two outs. Perrone led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a groundout, the second out of the inning. However, the Brewers kept things going as sophomore catcher Sal Costanzo walked, junior outfielder Devon Luongo singled home Perrone, and junior second baseman Joe Castilla hit an RBI single to score Costanzo, moving Luongo to third where he then scored on a passed ball giving Vassar a 3-0 lead. Junior third baseman David Ringold walked to put runners on first and second for sophomore designated hitter Scott Allen. Allen, normally a pitcher but making his first-ever start at designated hitter, came to the plate for his first career at bat and knocked a triple to left center to give the Brewers a 5-0 lead. Vassar took advantage of Union miscues, scoring on an error and a passed ball to take the early 7-0 lead.

The Brewers took advantage of Dutchmen mistakes again in the fourth to score four runs, scoring two runs on wild pitches, one run on an error, and one on a fielder's choice off the bat off senior outfielder Ari Glantz.

Although the Dutchmen made things interesting with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a four-run game, Vassar sophomore starter John MacGregor allowed just one more run over the next three innings while the Brewers added three more to clinch the 14-9 win. MacGregor (1-5) picked up his first win of the season, going the distance with nine runs (four earned) on eight hits with one strikeout and three walks. Andrew Catellier pitched 3.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-6.

Perrone went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with two runs and two stolen bases, while Luongo also had three hits to go with one RBI, three runs, and one stolen base. Glantz hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, his team-high third of the season, to finish with three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases. Sophomore first baseman Liam Lee stole two bases and Castilla added one as the Brewers stole eight bases in the game.

Game Two
In a lower-scoring second game, the Brewers again took the early lead with two runs in the first and three in the second to go up 5-1. Sophomore starter Dennis Tario picked up an impressive complete game win to improve to 2-5. Tario went nine innings, allowing two runs – just one earned – while scattering eight hits. He struck out four with no walks in his strongest collegiate outing.

Perrone again led off the game with a single and stole second, moving to third on a passed ball and scoring on a single from Lee, who stole second and scored on a RBI single from Costanzo. The Brewers made it 5-0 with three runs in the second as Union starting pitcher Andy Brown struggled with control. Junior catcher Mike Plude hit a one-out double to right field, moving to third on a ground out. Perrone scored Plude with a single and then stole second. Lee followed on base with a walk, and a double steal put runners at second and third. Glantz walked to load the bases, Costanzo drew a RBI walk to score Perrone and Luongo was hit by a pitch to score Lee.

Although the Dutchmen scored an unearned run in the second and another run in the fourth to make it 5-2, Tario shut out Union on four hits in the final five innings.

The Brewers gave themselves a six-run cushion with three in the seventh as Glantz led off with a single, stole second and third and scored on a balk and Castilla and Ringold added RBI singles.

Perrone was unstoppable on the base paths, stealing five bases to go with three hits, one RBI and two runs. Ringold had two doubles and an RBI, while Lee went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs and one RBI. Glantz added two stolen bases and Castilla had one as the Brewers outdid their first game total and were a perfect 10-for-10 in the nightcap.
