POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2010) – Although the Vassar College men's baseball team appeared poised to take the final game of its four-game Liberty League series against Saint Lawrence University, the Saints pulled out a comeback in the nightcap to complete the sweep, with 6-1 and 12-4 wins, on Saturday at Prentiss Field.

The Brewers fall to 4-11, 1-7 in the league and will look to snap a seven-game losing streak against non-league Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday. Although originally scheduled as an away game, Vassar will host the game at Prentiss at 4:00 p.m. The Saints improve to 9-7, 4-4 and return to action hosting Plattsburgh at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Game One
After two high-scoring games with a combined 39 runs on Friday, the opening game on Saturday was more defensively-minded with the Saints taking a 6-1 win. St. Lawrence starter Pat Considine picked up the complete game win, holding the Brewers to just two hits over seven innings with Vassar's one run coming in the seventh inning, unearned. Considine struck out eight with just three walks. Vassar junior starter Daniel Berkowitz took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits. Berkowitz struggled with control as he fell to 1-2, walking six and hitting one batter. Sophomore Race Bottini had a strong relief appearance for Vassar, pitching the final 2.1 innings for Vassar, allowing one earned run on four hits, and striking out four with no walks.

The Saints plated two runs in the second inning off a two RBI double from Carter Franz and added two more in the third on a two-run home run from Matt DeLuca. St. Lawrence added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead into the seventh.

Considine began to tire in the seventh, as junior third baseman David Ringold notched his first hit of the season, a two-out double to left center and eventually plated Vassar's only run of the game as an error and walk loaded the bases for senior outfielder Adam Murphy who drew an RBI walk. However, Considine then induced a popup to end the game and thwart the Vassar comeback.

The Saints had nine hits, paced by a 2-for-4, three RBI effort from Franz including a double. Tim Harris and Robert Carman added two hits apiece. St. Lawrence stranded 13 runners on the day, leaving the bases loaded in three innings. Ringold's double and a single from freshman shortstop Mike Perrone in the third inning represented Vassar's only hits of the game.

Game Two
The Brewers started the second game in much better fashion than the first, scoring one run in each of the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead. Junior outfielder Devon Luongo drew a two-out walk in the first, coming around to score on a deep double from sophomore designated hitter Sal Costanzo. In the second, sophomore second baseman Liam Lee led off with a triple to center, scoring on a base hit from Ringold. The following inning, the Brewers upped their lead to three as Perrone led off with a single, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw from St. Lawrence starter Zach Slater and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Ari Glantz.

Vassar took the three run lead into the fifth, but the Saints drew within one on a two-RBI bases-loaded single from DeLuca that scored Bryan Brennan and Franz who reached on a walk and single, respectively. St. Lawrence took the lead in the following inning. A long two-run triple to left center from Franz scored Harris and Paul Piatelli who were both hit by pitches, for the tying and go-ahead run and Franz scored on a two-out wild pitch strikeout to give the Saints a 5-3 lead.

The Brewers, playing as the visiting team on Friday, responded in the top of the sixth as Murphy led off with a double down the left field line. A single from Perrone scored Murphy, but St. Lawrence reliever Jason Conde, who entered in the fifth, got outs from the next three batters and Vassar was unable to tie the game.

Things went downhill for the Brewers following the top of the seventh, as consecutive singles in the bottom of the inning chased sophomore starter John MacGregor. Freshman Zander Mrlik came in to pitch for the Brewers getting an out to start, but the Saints eventually scored four runs in the inning, with Bottini pitching the final out of the inning. St. Lawrence tacked on three runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open what was once a close game for the final 12-4 score.

MacGregor, who started strong, holding the Saints scoreless on two hits through four innings, took the loss to fall to 0-2. MacGregor went six-plus innings, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits with three strike outs and a walk. Conde earned the win for the Saints, with five strong innings of relief to improve to 3-1. Conde allowed one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Vassar recorded 12 hits in the game, with Ringold putting up an impressive 3-for-4, one RBI, one double effort and improving his stat-line for the day to 4-for-5 with one RBI, one run and two doubles. Perrone was 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run, while Lee was 2-for-4 with a triple and one run. Luongo stole three bases and recorded one hit and one run.

For the Saints, Franz completed a monster day, going 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs, upping his total to five hits and seven RBIs on Saturday. DeLuca added three hits, two RBI and two runs, while Duff went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
