NEW PALTZ, NY (April 28, 2010) – Avenging a loss to their cross-river rivals earlier in the season, the Vassar College baseball team matched a single game program-high with four home runs and soundly defeated SUNY New Paltz, 15-8, in non-Liberty League play on Wednesday.
The Brewers improve to 8-23 and will have another non-league contest on Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against Hamilton College beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Hawks fall to 17-16 and will play away SUNYAC doubleheaders this weekend, at Fredonia on Saturday and Brockport on Sunday.
The Brewers doubled their season total for home runs, and matched a program best for home runs in a single game. Vassar now has eight home runs on the season. The only other time a Vassar team had four round-trippers in one game was on March 10, 2002 against SUNY Utica.
Vassar, which pounded out 15 hits on the day, got its offense started early with three runs in the first inning. Freshman shortstop
Mike Perrone led off with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a ground out. A sacrifice fly from junior catcher
David Ringold plated the Brewers' first run and after sophomore outfielder
Sal Costanzo walked, junior outfielder
Devon Luongo notched Vassar's first home run of the game and his second of the season to give his team the early 3-0 lead.
Although the Hawks responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, and neither team scored in the second, the Brewer bats remained potent, as Vassar scored 12 runs from the third inning through the sixth.
In the third inning, it was senior outfielder
Ari Glantz with Vassar's second home run and his second of the season, a two-run shot that scored Perrone who reached on a leadoff double. The Hawks again responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Brewers broke open a 5-2 game with five runs in the fourth inning.
The Brewers plated all their runs with two outs. Freshman third baseman
Conor Gallagher reached on a walk, sophomore second baseman
Liam Lee singled, and a Perrone single scored Gallagher. Glantz was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ringold, who delivered in the most productive manner possible, with a grand-slam, his first home run of the season. Again, New Paltz had a response, scoring two in the bottom of the inning to cut Vassar's lead to six, but the Brewers added four runs in the top of the fifth.
Junior designated hitter
Joe Castilla led off the fifth with a single, stealing second and scoring on a single from junior first baseman
Joe Bubar. Lee reached base on an error, advancing to second with Bubar moving to third. A two-run Perrone single scored both runners, and Perrone later came around to score after stealing second and coming home on a base hit from Glantz.
Costanzo added Vassar's final run of the game with a leadoff home run in the sixth inning, his second home run of the year.
Although the Hawks outscored the Brewers 4-0 in the final three innings, Vassar's big lead remained comfortably intact.
Perrone led Vassar's 15-hit performance, going 4-for-6 with four runs, three RBIs, and two stolen bases. Glantz was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Costanzo and Lee had two hits and two runs apiece, Luongo added two hits and two RBIs, and Ringold contributed five RBIs.
The Hawks managed 14 hits in the loss, led by a 4-for-5, three RBI effort from Clinton Boettcher, while Mike Sherlock was 3-for-4 with three runs and Matt O'Neill went 3-for-3 with one run.
Freshman pitcher
Zander Mrlik earned his first career win in his first start, throwing 6.2 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits. He struck out two and walked one. Sophomore
Zachary Prudoff pitched 2.1 innings in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits, striking out one with no walks.
Joel Judson pitched the first two innings to take the loss for the Hawks, as New Paltz used five different pitchers.
