POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 27, 2010) – Unable to take a lead in either game of Tuesday's Liberty League doubleheader, the Vassar College baseball team dropped 8-4 and 5-1 decisions to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Prentiss Field.
The Brewers drop to 7-23, 3-17 in the league and are back in action tomorrow for a non-league game at SUNY New Paltz at 4:00 p.m. The Engineers improve to 19-11, 9-7 and play a non-league game tomorrow as well, hosting Williams College at 4:00 p.m.
Game One
In the first inning of the opener it looked as though the Engineers might cruise through the game, as the first eight batters came to the plate, but sophomore starter
Scott Allen escaped the inning with just two runs allowed on three hits, leaving the bases loaded with an inning-ending fielder's choice.
The Brewers put up a run in the second inning as junior outfielder
Devon Luongo hit a one-out double, scoring as freshman designated hitter
David Keith looped a single into right field. RPI remained just one run ahead of Vassar into the sixth as the teams traded runs in both the fourth and fifth innings but the Engineers gave themselves a comfortable cushion with three runs in the sixth.
Patrick Reardon led off the sixth with a double, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt from Josh Brooks and scoring on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Krushelnyski. The Engineers continued to push with two outs and the bases empty, as Camden Mamigoian doubled to right field, scoring on a single from Jonny Rio. Rio stole second, scoring on a base hit from Sunjith Murali to give RPI a 7-3 lead. The Engineers tacked on another run in the seventh, unearned, to take an 8-3 lead.
Vassar scored in the bottom of the inning, as freshman shortstop
Mike Perrone led off with an infield single, taking second on a balk, and scoring on a one-out single from junior third baseman
David Ringold, but RPI starter Mike Cieszko got the final two outs to record the complete game win.
Ciesko improved to 3-2, scattering 12 hits with four runs (three earned) and striking out four with no walks. Allen (1-3) took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings with seven earned runs on 14 hits. Sophomore
Race Bottini pitched 1.1 innings of relief for Vassar, allowing one run, unearned, on one hit, with one walk.
Ringold went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Brewers while Perrone (one run), and Luongo (two runs) also had two hits apiece.
The Engineers had 15 hits, paced by Reardon who was 4-for-5 with three runs while Rio went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Murali added two hits and two RBIs, and Mamigonian had two hits, one RBI, and one run.
Game Two
Behind an impressive complete game three-hitter from Engineer starter Ryan Washburn, RPI completed the sweep on Tuesday. Washburn, who had a one-hit shutout through the first six innings, improved to 4-2, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six with two walks.
Vassar sophomore starter
Dennis Tario pitched well despite taking the loss to fall to 1-5. In six innings, Tario scattered nine hits – just six through the first five innings – while all five of RPI's runs were unearned. Tario struck out three with no walks. Bottini pitched a shutout inning of relief, allowing just one hit.
In the second inning the Engineers took advantage of a two-out Vassar error that allowed Billy Nikolski to reach and consecutive singles from Tom Jebb, Reardon, and Markus Dellelo led to an early 2-0 RPI lead.
Tario shut out the Engineers on just one hit through the next three innings, but just like in the first game, RPI scored three runs in the sixth to take a more commanding lead. Mamigonian blasted a leadoff double, Scott Robinson followed him on base on a catcher's interference call, and an ensuing fielding error allowed Rio to reach and load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly from Nikolski and RBI singles from Jebb and Reardon gave the Engineers a 5-0 lead.
The Brewers broke up Washburn's shutout in the seventh inning as senior outfielder
Ari Glantz led off with a single up the middle, stealing second and third before scoring on one-out groundout. Vassar's only other hits off Washburn came on a double from Luongo and a single from freshman outfielder
Sean Morash.
RPI got two-hit games from its first three batters, Reardon, Dellello, and Krushelnyski, while Jebb led the way with a 3-for-3 one run, one RBI effort from the bottom of the lineup.
