Both teams pounded the ball on Friday, as the Saints had 30 hits to Vassar's 27 with 16 extra base hits between the teams.
Game One
The Saints scored nine runs in the first two innings of the opener, knocking nine hits – including two triples and a double – off Vassar sophomore starter
Dennis Tario en route to a 17-4 win. Three errors didn't help Tario's cause, as St. Lawrence scored five of those nine runs unearned. The Brewers committed a total of six errors in the game, with seven of St. Lawrence's runs unearned.
In the first inning, a hard hit standup RBI triple to right center from Carter Franz scored Tim Harris who led off the game with a single down the left field line. The Saints got three hits to begin the second inning, on a leadoff triple from Taylor Engle, an RBI single from Ethan Braddock, and a bunt single from Tom Pasquali. Although Tario induced a groundout double play on the next batter, consecutive singles and an error continued the inning, and the Saints went on to score five more runs, just one of those earned.
Vassar sophomore reliever
Zachary Prudoff replaced Tario following the second inning and looked sharp with a 1-2-3 third inning. However, the Saints scored eight runs in the following three innings, chasing Prudoff in the sixth with five runs. Sophomore
Race Bottini entered to pitch for the Brewers, pitching the final 1.2 innings and allowing no runs with two hits, one walk and one strikeout.
St. Lawrence starter Chris Cook earned the complete game win to improve to 2-1. Cook allowed four earned runs and scattered ten hits with three strikeouts and no walks over seven innings.
Junior outfielder
Devon Luongo had a big game for the Brewers, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Luongo hit a leadoff double in the second, coming around to score Vassar's first run on a two-out RBI single from junior catcher
Mike Plude. In the sixth inning, Luongo added a two-run home run – Vassar's first of the season – over the left field fence to score sophomore designated hitter
Sal Costanzo who reached on a leadoff double. Vassar also scored in the fifth as freshman shortstop
Mike Perrone hit a one-out triple, scoring on a groundout RBI from junior first baseman
Joe Bubar. Senior outfielder
Ari Glantz was also strong at the plate for Vassar, going 3-for-3 with two stolen bases.
St. Lawrence pounded out 15 hits on the day, paced by a 3-for-3, two RBI, two run effort from Franz. Pasquali (3-for-4, one RBI, two runs), Robert Carman (2-for-5, two RBI, one run), Engle (2-for-4, two runs), Ryan Duff (1-for-3, three RBI, two runs), and Pat Considine (1-for-3, three RBI, one run), also put up big numbers in the Saints' explosive offensive outing.
Game Two
The Brewers' early-inning struggles did not continue in the second game as freshman starter
Lawrence Flicker pitched two opening innings of shutout ball. However, those would prove to be the only innings Vassar kept the Saints off the scoreboard.
Vassar opened up scoring in the bottom of the second as Luongo continued to impress at the plate, hitting a leadoff single to right field, eventually scoring on an RBI single from freshman third baseman
Conor Gallagher.
The teams traded runs through the next inning and half, as St. Lawrence tied the game in the top of the third, Vassar regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning, and the Saints again responded, taking a 2-2 tie into the bottom of the fourth. The Brewers looked poised to respond, loading the bases with one out, but an extremely close call at first base resulted in an inning-ending double play as St. Lawrence starter Sean Voss escaped the jam.
The Saints rewarded Voss with three runs in the top of the fifth. Harris and Franz got on base with consecutive one-out singles, and Harris came around to score on a two-out double from Matt D'Auteuil. Carman followed with a two RBI single to give the Saints a 5-2 lead, cushioned by two more runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh to take an 8-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Brewer bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore second baseman
Liam Lee sent a one-out single up the middle, advancing to second on a single from Glantz, with Costanzo loading the bases after drawing a walk, chasing Voss to bring Kyle Donaldson in to pitch for the Saints. Luongo greeted Donaldson with an RBI single to right to again load the bases. A wild pitch scored Glantz and advanced the runners and consecutive RBI singles from Castilla and Gallagher drew the Brewers within two, trailing 8-6 heading into the top of the eighth.
The Saints tacked on a run in the eighth and though the Brewers brought the tying run to the plate with no outs, St. Lawrence reliever Jason Conde escape the inning unscathed, with a fielder's choice that erased the lead runner, and two fly outs. The Saints added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth and although Castilla blasted a triple to right centerfield, scoring on a groundout from Gallagher, the Brewers were unable to stitch together a complete comeback in the bottom of the inning.
The bats for both teams were again busy in the second game, as the Brewers outhit the Saints, 17-15. Gallagher went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Vassar, while Castilla was 3-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and one run. Luongo and Glantz were both 2-for-5 with two runs with Luongo adding an RBI and Glantz stealing a base.
Carman (three RBI), Franz (two RBI, two runs), and DeLuca (one RBI, one run) all went 3-for-5 for the Saints.
Voss earned the win to improve to 1-2, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 6.1 innings. Flicker (1-2) took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits with three walks.
