POTSDAM, NY (April 10, 2010) – One costly inning in both games of the Vassar College baseball team's doubleheader at Clarkson University on Saturday resulted in a Golden Knight sweep as the Brewers dropped 11-2 and 5-3 decisions at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Brewers fall to 5-13, 1-9 in the Liberty League while the Golden Knights improve to 7-11, 5-5. The teams will play another doubleheader at Clarkson on Sunday, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Both games were decided in one inning. In the opener, the Golden Knights broke open a 2-2 tie with a nine-run third inning that decided the game. In the second game, the Brewers took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but four runs from Clarkson boosted the home team to the sweep.

Game One
In the opener, all the scoring was done in the first three innings, with a nine-run third inning for Clarkson proving to be the difference, breaking up a 2-2 tie as the Brewers fell 11-2. The Golden Knights brought 13 hitters to the plate in the third, scoring their nine runs off eight hits, seven of those singles with the exception of a leadoff double from Brett Peplowski. Vassar sophomore Zachary Prudoff entered to relive sophomore starter Dennis Tario in the inning, recording the final two outs. Prudoff threw 3.2 strong inning of relief, holding the Golden Knights scoreless on four hits, with six strikeouts to just one walk. Tario took the loss to fall to 1-2, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Clarkson starter David Georald earned the complete game win to improve to 2-2, allowing one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

The Brewers took the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Freshman shortstop Mike Perrone led off with a single, moving to second when junior outfielder Devon Luongo reached on an error. A single off the bat of senior outfielder Ari Glantz scored Perrone and moved Luongo to third. When Glantz went to steal second, Luongo came home on an error by the Clarkson catcher. Those two first inning runs would prove to be all the offense Vassar could muster however, as Georald held the Brewers to just two hits over the next six innings as Vassar was outhit 14-4 on the day.

The Golden Knights tied the score with a run in the first and a run in the second, both unearned.

Game Two
In game two, Vassar again got on the scoreboard first, tallying twice in the second inning. Freshman outfielder Sean Morash plated two with a one-out single to left field to score Luongo and junior designated hitter Joe Castilla, who both reached on one out singles. After Clarkson got one back in the fourth inning on a Brady Torbitt single through the left side, Vassar responded with a run in the top of the fifth when Glantz dropped a double in deep left to score sophomore outfielder Liam Lee and Vassar took a 3-1 lead which held until the eighth inning.

Vassar freshman starter Lawrence Flicker held Clarkson's bats quiet through most of the contest, scattering just four hits in the first seven innings. It was not until the eighth frame that Clarkson took advantage of some miscues to gain its first lead in the contest. Jerry Coleman opened the inning by reaching on an error, and from there Clarkson was able to load the bases thanks to a walk and a hit batsman. The next two hitters were retired, but another error allowed Matt Curry to score while keeping the bases loaded. Chris Falteisek then lined a double over the infield and into the right-center gap, clearing the bases and giving Clarkson a 5-3 edge.

Vassar had two on and one out in the top of the ninth, but a flyout and a fielder's choice ended the threat.

Vince Baldwin picked up the victory in relief, pitching four and two-thirds innings of scoreless bullpen work. He allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out six. Alex Giovannone had the start and allowed three runs in four and one-third innings. Flicker took the loss to fall to 2-3, allowing just one earned run on five hits, with four strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Race Bottini pitched the final out of the eighth. Vassar committed three errors, leading to four unearned runs.

Junior third baseman David Ringold was the only Vassar hitter with two hits in the second contest, going 2-for-4. Torbitt led the attack for the Golden Knights with two hits before coming out of the game with a leg injury in the fifth inning.
