POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 20, 2010) – While his final game as a collegiate player did not have the desired outcome, Vassar College men's basketball senior guard Casey Black gave a yeoman's effort in the Brewers' season-ending 79-55 loss to Hobart on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics & Fitness Center. Black tallied a game high 17 points in his last game for Vassar, but the Statesmen had too much second half offensive firepower for the Brewers. Click here for Black's Senior Day Program.

Vassar concludes the 2009-10 season with a 2-23, 0-14 record, while Hobart finishes its regular season at 16-9, 9-5, and is seeded No. 3 in the Liberty League Championships. The Statesmen will play No. 2 seed Skidmore at St. Lawrence next Friday.

The game came down to the second half, where Hobart outscored Vassar 37-18 en route to the 79-55 win. The Brewers, who trailed by ten points, 40-30, with 1:46 to play in the first half, went on a 7-2 run to close within 42-37 at intermission. Black tallied 11 of his 17 points in the opening session, connecting on 5 of 10 shots from the field.

Whereas the game was essentially even in the first half, Hobart turned the tables in the final 20 minutes, particularly in points in the paint and bench points. The Statesmen scored 28 of their 40 points in the paint in the second half, compared to just four for Vassar. Hobart's bench contributed 22 second half points to Vassar's four and was able to score 10 points off turnovers to methodically pull away. It wasn't until midway through the second half that Hobart built its lead. A layup by freshman forward John Donnelly cut Hobart's lead to 48-43 with 14:48 to play, but in a three minute span, Hobart built a 12-point cushion, 55-43, following a jumper by sophomore center Marc Bertucci with 11:55 to play.

The Brewers were stuck at 45 points for nearly three minutes and during that time, Hobart built a 64-45 lead following a jumper by sophomore guard Matt Pebole, the Liberty League's leading scorer. Vassar was able to convert on only four of 22 field goal attempts in the second half, enabling Hobart to steadily pull away.

For Vassar, Black finished with 17 points followed by Donnelly with 13 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Calbe McGraw had 11 points and six rebounds.

Hobart was placed with Pobole with 13 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Greg Stern had 12 points in 18 minutes. Thirteen of Hobart's 15 player roster scored at least a bucket.

Presenting a tough physical matchup for the Brewers, Hobart led in rebounding 54-29.
