Men's Basketball Downed By No. 5 Nationally Ranked Williams College 92-42

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 4, 2010) -- Behind a balanced attack that put five scorers in double figures, the No. 5 nationally ranked Williams College men's basketball team outshot Vassar College, 92-42, Saturday evening at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

Williams wasted little time staking themselves to an early lead, scoring the first 12 points of the game, including a pair of threes by sophomore James Klemm before a Caleb McGraw teardrop in the lane ended the run. From there, Williams gradually extended its lead to 32-16, before a 9-0 streak by the Ephs put the game out of reach for Vassar.

The Brewers (1-5) will next play on Tuesday, December 7, concluding the semester by hosting cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz at 7:00 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Ephs (7-0) will also compete on Tuesday, hosting Hamilton College at 7:30 p.m.

The squads entered the locker room with Williams holding a 46-22 advantage, despite 11 points from McGraw, who started the game 4-5 from the field, with two free throws for 11 of Vassar's first 13 points. Williams' junior guard James Wang led all scorers in the first half, notching 12 points on 4-4 shooting from the field, including 2-2 from beyond the arc.

In the second half, Vassar struggled to keep the game close, maintaining the 24-point deficit for the first seven and a half minutes of the period as they sought to fight their way back. However, with a 56-32 lead, Williams iced the contest with a 15-0 run keyed by eight points from freshman Michael Mayer, including six in a row.

Both teams prudently managed possession, combining for only 13 turnovers and 23 assists. In the second half, the two teams recorded 12 assists, compared to just four turnovers.

Williams held a marked advantage in size, which they utilized to outscore Vassar in the paint, 32-6, including a 24-4 advantage in the second half. Williams also outrebounded Vassar 58-26 including a 17-5 advantage on the offensive end and a 29-11 margin in the second half.

McGraw and Wang each led their respective teams, recording a game-high 16 points, Wang achieved the feat on perfect shooting, going 5-5 from the field, 2-2 from 3-point range, and 4-4 from the free-throw line.

For Williams, Mayer added 15 points, senior center Troy Whittington scored 12, and sophomore guard James Klemm tallied 11 points. Freshman guard Hayden Rooke-Ley recorded 10 points, a game high eight rebounds, and a game high four assists.
