POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 23, 2010) — The size and aggressive defending of Hunter College proved too much for the Vassar College men's basketball team, which dropped its second home game of the season, 60-38, on Tuesday evening in the Athletics and Fitness Center.

With the loss, the Brewers fall to 1-2 and will next face Berkley at home on Sunday, November 28 at 4 p.m. The Hawks improve to 2-2, and will next travel to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Tuesday, November 30 for a 7 p.m. game.

With 4:37 left to play in the first half, and the Hawks up 24-13, 6-foot-11 Hunter senior center Panagi Koutsoloukas grabbed a defensive rebound off a missed shot by sophomore forward John Donnelly and dished a quick outlet pass behind the Vassar defense to senior guard Jason Cole. Cole immediately found junior forward John Akinyemi slashing through the paint, and Akinyemi elevated for an emphatic one-handed dunk to punctuate the first half.

Akinyemi's dunk was in many ways emblematic of the problems the Hunter defense gave the Brewers all night long. Hunter's big interior players dominated the defensive glass, pulling down 31 rebounds compared to Vassar's 19, and outscored the Brewers 36-8 in the paint. Hunter's size allowed them to keep Vassar away from clean looks at the rim, forcing outside jump shots all night long. The Brewers managed only a 19 percent field goal percentage for the game, while Hunter shot 48 percent.

Hunter came out of the gate playing a very aggressive defense, proving deadly efficient in their double-teaming and trapping of the Brewers. Hunter managed 11 steals in the game, and held a 15-13 edge on points off turnovers and a 6-0 edge on the fastbreak. Hunter raced out to a 35-15 halftime lead and had the game in hand throughout the contest.

A bright spot for Vassar came mid-way through the second half, when the Brewers discovered a hot shooting touch, going on a 12-3, eight minute run which brought them to within 16 points — the closest they would get in the second half. The Brewers also got a lift from their bench, with the second unit adding 18 points to the effort, outscoring Hunter's bench by eight points.

Junior guard Caleb McGraw was the lone Brewer to reach double figures scoring, finishing the game with 15 points and six rebounds. Donnelly and freshman forward Lucas Wager tied for a team-high with seven rebounds apiece, and junior captain Nick Justiz led the Brewers with three assists.

Mark Courtien and Maxwell Dubois each had 12 points for Hunter. Panagi Koutsoloukas had a game high 10 rebounds.
