BEVERLY, MA. – The Vassar College men's basketball team shot nearly fifty percent from three point land and led in points from the charity stripe but this 10 point advantage was not quite enough as Endicott College prevailed 70-66 in a seesaw season opener on Monday night.
The Brewers (0-1) host Bard in their home opener this Wednesday, November 17 at 7:00 pm. at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Gulls (1-0) will play their second game of the season on the road against Framingham State on Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
Down 68-63 with 2:32 left in the game, sophomore guard
Jon Herzog hit his fourth triple of the game to pull the Brewers within two. Following a stop, Herzog fired a three for the lead with 1:18 remaining but had no luck. Endicott's Lance Green converted two free throws to put the Gulls up 70-66. Vassar missed two three point attempts in the final seconds for the 70-66 final.
Endicott took charge in the second half with 8:31 remaining in the game as Chris Galbraith knocked down a jumper in the paint to put the home team up 54-51. On the next Vassar possession, Herzog hit one of his four three-pointers to knot the score at 54-54, but a 7-1 Endicott run capped off by clutch free throws by freshman Spencer Calling gave the Blue and Green their largest lead of the game at 61-55.
The first half suggested a close game to follow as the two teams exchanged the lead on nine different occasions. Each team found offensive spark from their benches as the Gulls got 15 bench points and the Brewers saw 14 points from their non-starters.
Endicott forced 11 of Vassar's 21 turnovers in the first half for four points. However, the Brewers took better advantage of turnovers as they scored 11 points off Endicott's seven turnovers. Endicott held Vassar's points on turnovers to zero in the second half by conceding only three turnovers.
The Brewers showed a knack for the three-ball, knocking down 9-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc as Herzog hit four of six from long range. The Brewers collected 15 points on the line with a 71.4%.
The Gulls shot 43.3% from the floor as a team and were effective at the free-throw line, hitting 84.6% of their attempts for 11 points.

John Donnelly led Vassar with a game-high 14 points. Herzog and junior forward
Ethan Shanley led the Brewers with four assists each alongside 12 points apiece. Freshman
Evan Carberry dominated the glass in his collegiate debut with a game high nine rebounds.
Galbraith and freshman forward Lachlan Magee each posted a game-high 14 points to lead an Endicott offense that erased a one-point halftime deficit to win their first contest of the season. Freshman guards Jordan Lewis and Bennett Knowlton contributed double-digit figures with 12 points each. Greene led all players with five assists and a game-high 31 minutes on the court.
