Field Hockey Hangs Tough in 5-0 Loss to No. 9 Nationally Ranked Skidmore

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 8, 2010) – Despite a multi-defensive save effort by the backfield, the Vassar College field hockey team was unable to salvage an intense 5-0 Liberty League contest with No. 9 nationally ranked Skidmore College Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

The Brewers fall to 2-10 (0-4) on the season and will face Union College at home in a Liberty League game on Saturday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. The Thoroughbreds, having won eight games in a row, improve to 9-1 and 4-0 in the league. They next travel to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a Liberty League match-up on Saturday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m.

Vassar managed just four shots in the contest – two on goal – with their first and best chance coming 7:35 into the game when freshman midfielder Cameron Felt ripped a shot from the top of the circle that was denied by Skidmore senior tender Liz Catinella. It was Catinellas only save of the game, good enough for the win, before leaving the contest early in the second half.

Despite the early chance for the Brewers, Skidmore was firmly in control from start to finish, outshooting Vassar 35-4 (22-2 on goal), including a 24-1 edge in the first half. The Thoroughbreds struck first 10:09 into the game when a save by Vassar senior goalkeeper Rachel Horwitz deflected low to senior midfield Katie Potter for an empty net look. Potter would score again at 22:05, despite Vassar senior defender Kara Voght making a defensive save on the goal line of senior forward Christine Kemp's shot.

Skidmore continued to apply the offensive pressure, and Kemp and Potter would trade positions for Skidmore's final goal of the half, with Kemp ripping a feed from Potter through a field of defenders and into the goal.

Vassar brought renewed energy into the second half, but the deficit proved too much to overcome despite Vassar's only shot on goal in the second half by freshman midfielder Rachel Waldman. Voght would make another impressive defensive save in the contest, clearing a shot inches in front of the goal, but unable to stop the second effort shot by junior forward Annie Rosencrans. Rosencrans would score the Thoroughbreds fifth and final goal at 48:10, deflecting in a pass from sophomore forward Ceilidh MacNeill.

Despite being under near constant pressure from Skidmore, Horwitz managed eight saves before sitting out the second half, and freshman Maggie Brelis made four of her own the rest of the way. Skidmore would play all three of its goalkeepers in the contest, with senior Margaux Hoagland saving one shot and freshman Allie Sosinsky not having to make any in closing out the game.
