Maier's Overtime Goal Lifts Field Hockey Past Scranton In the Season Finale

Box Score

SCRANTON, PA (October 26, 2010) – Junior forward Emily Maier made sure the Vassar College field hockey team would not enter the 2011 season on a losing note. Maier scored the game winning goal off a pass from senior forward Madeline Rooney on a breakaway in the 77th minute to lead the Brewers to a 2-1 overtime victory over the University of Scranton in the season finale Tuesday night at Fitzpatrick Field.

The Brewers conclude the season with a 3-14 record, but most importantly snap a 12-game losing streak heading into the 2011 campaign. Scranton drops to 5-12, and will attempt to snap its seven game losing streak when they face Keystone College on October 30.

After a scoreless first half, Vassar scored first, converting a penalty corner for a goal in the 56th minute. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Annis deflected a shot attempt by senior midfielder Jessica Lance past Scranton junior goalkeeper Alexandria Marandino for her first goal of the season.

Scranton tied it up moments later when first-year forward Caitlin Liberatore deflected a ball past Vassar freshman goalie Maggie Brelis after Megargel drilled a shot from just inside the top of the scoring circle. Liberatore's goal was her second of the season.

In overtime, Royals first-year midfielder Laura Megargel blasted a shot that got past Brelis off of a penalty corner, but the goal was wiped away when the officials ruled her attempt was just outside the scoring arc.

Scranton had its opportunities to win the game, both in regulation and in overtime, but failed to capitalize on either chance. In the closing minute, forward Kaitlyn Tirney stole a pass at midfield and found herself in a breakaway situation against Brelis, but her shot attempt from just inside the scoring circle went left of the cage.

Defensively, the Royals held Vassar to just one shot attempt on goal in the first half despite five penalty corner attempts by the Brewers. For the game, Scranton held a slight 15-13 edge in shots.

Brelis finished with six saves to pick up her first victory of the season, while Marandino was credited with four stops.
