Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 2, 2010) -- The Vassar College women's soccer team won their sixth straight game, propelled by two goals from senior captain Carolyn Demougeot as she reached another scoring milestone in the 2-1 victory over Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute Saturday afternoon at Gordon field.

The No. 10 NSCAA East Regionally ranked Brewers (9-2, 3-0 Liberty) take on the No. 7 NSCAA Nationally ranked William Smith College on the road Friday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. and Hamilton (ranked No. 9 NSCAA East Region) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Engineers (4-4-1, 1-2 Liberty) travel to play the same Liberty League opponents, facing Hamilton on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and William Smith on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Demougeot put the Brewers on the board in the 20th minute with her 25th career goal. Sophomore Keiko Kurita recovered her own blocked shot and threaded a pass across the top of the box to Demougeot who beat two defenders to the ball and knocked a sliding shot past the oncoming keeper and off the right post for the goal.

The Brewers scored the second goal of the half in the 41st minute as senior defender Elysa Greenberg lofted a pass in into the box. Kurita headed the ball upwards over the keeper and Demougeot closed in to put the loose ball into the empty net for her 26th career goal, tying Andrea Johnson '92 for fourth all-time in program history.

After several opportunities in the second half, RPI narrowed the Brewer lead with a goal in the 76th minute. Freshman Sara Rothschild intercepted a backwards pass to Vassar goalkeeper Lexi Hutton and slipped past Hutton to tap her fifth goal of the season into the open net.

The Brewers withstood an RPI offensive frenzy in the final minutes and held on for the 2-1 win. The Engineers outshot the Brewers 6-4 in the second stanza and 11-10 in the game.

Demougeot posted her third two-goal game of the season and leads the Brewers with eight goals for 19 points. Demougeot now has 60 career points--sixth all-time in program history, one point shy of Annie Izaki '00. “Carolyn's motto is hard work pays off and her hard work has been paying off,” said Moller.

Kurita leads the Brewers with six assists and is second on the team with 10 points. Moller stated, “Keiko was phenomenal and did an amazing job filling in up front.”

Hutton made four saves to boost her record to 7-1. RPI's Stephanie Vargas (4-4-1) made three saves in the loss.

On improving to 3-0 in the Liberty League, head coach Richard Moller said, “We've never been 3-0 in the program's history and this win puts us another step closer to our goal of making the Liberty League Tournament.”
