CANTON, NY (January 16, 2010) – After struggling to score early in Saturday's Liberty League contest, the Vassar College men's basketball team was unable to recover from a 15-point first half deficit, falling 72-52 to St. Lawrence University. The Brewers scored just ten points on 3-for-12 shooting from the field in the opening 13 and a half minutes of play and although they were only outscored by five points in the second half, their first half offensive woes were too much to overcome.
Vassar drops to 2-10, 0-2 after losing its tenth straight game. The Brewers look to turn things around on Tuesday, playing at Rensselaer at 8:00 p.m. The Saints pick up their first league win and improve to 5-9, 1-1.
The Saints jumped out to a quick 15-2 lead just over seven minutes following opening tipoff and the Brewers were never able to get closer than 11 points, with St. Lawrence leading by as many as 19 in the first half. The Brewers did not hit double digits until sophomore
Caleb McGraw drained a three-pointer with 8:06 remaining in the half, making the score 24-10. St. Lawrence took a 33-18 lead into the locker room, as the Saints shot 44.1 percent from the floor and the Brewers shot 31.8 percent.
In the second half, Vassar drew within ten, 39-29, with 12:07 remaining following four straight points from freshman
John Donnelly but the Saints would allow the Brewers no closer, ballooning the lead to as much as 27.
McGraw led the Brewers with 17 points, while Donnelly contributed 13 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and four assists. No other player scored more than five points for Vassar.
For the Saints, Garrett Sharlow had a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double to go with four steals, while Terry Parham contributed 12 points and three assists, and Andy Hoercher added 11 points.
With only eight players dressed to play, the Brewers faced a significant numbers disadvantage, and were outscored in bench points 33-12. Thirteen different Saints entered the game and all but one scored at least two points. St. Lawrence also held a 42-20 advantage in points in the paint.
