NEW YORK, NY (January 11, 2010) – After trailing by one point heading into halftime, the Vassar College women's basketball team pieced together a 17-4 run to open the second half en route to earning a 65-52 win over John Jay College, in the process snapping a four-game losing streak on Monday at the Doghouse.
The Brewers improve to 3-5 and look to take their momentum into the opening weekend of Liberty League play as Vassar makes the long trip north to play Clarkson University on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and St. Lawrence University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Bloodhounds continue to search for their first win at 0-13 and will host Brooklyn College on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
While the second half run was crucial in Vassar's gaining a commanding lead, a late first half surge was just as notable in bringing the Brewers within striking distance. Although the Brewers scored the first points of the game off a layup from freshman
Tori Chaltain less than 30 seconds after opening tip-off, the Bloodhounds quickly scored four points to take the lead and maintained that edge for the remainder of the half. A free throw from Chantelle Smith put John Jay ahead, 24-16, with 6:03 left in the first frame, matching the Bloodhounds' largest lead of the game. However, the Brewers responded with an 11-4 run to close out the half, capped by a three-pointer from junior
Carolyn Crampton that sent the Brewers into the locker room trailing 28-27.
Vassar built on that momentum in the second half, gaining its first lead since Chaltain's game-opening basket, as the freshman also scored the first points of the second period, draining a jumper to give the Brewers a 29-28 lead. Vassar would not trail from that point on, thanks to nine straight points from sophomore
Brittany Parks, who sank a three-pointer, and followed that with a layup and four free throws, giving the Brewers a 38-30 lead with 13:25 to play. Vassar extended the lead to double-digits, 44-32, following an old-fashioned three-point play from senior
Emily Haeuser with 11:15 to play. Although a Dominque Grice layup brought the Bloodhounds within eight, 46-38, with 7:37 remaining, the Brewers responded with eight straight points, off two three-pointers from sophomore
Kristyn Tempora and a layup from freshman
Natalie Allen to take a 16 point lead that would never drop below ten.
The Brewers received a solid all-around effort, as every player who played scored. Vassar was paced by an 18-point, six assist, four steal performance from Parks, while Haeuser chipped in her fifth double double of the season, recording 11 points and ten rebounds to go with three assists. Chaltain had an impressive game, notching career highs in both points (14) and rebounds (10), to record her first career double double. Tempora chipped in with eight points, while Crampton added five points and five assists.
The Bloodhounds were led by a game-high 21 points from Grice, while Smith and Jessica Lirio chipped in with 12 points apiece.
