Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 29, 2009) – Although the Vassar College women's soccer team controlled possession from start to finish, it took over 60 minutes for the Brewers to locate their scoring touch, tallying three second half goals to pick up a non-league 3-0 win over Bard College on Tuesday evening at Weinberg Field.

The Brewers improve to 5-4, 1-1 in the Liberty League and will return to league action on the road against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Raptors fall to 4-3-2, 1-0-2 in the Skyline Conference and will play at Sage College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

After controlling the first half but failing to seriously pressure Bard goalie Jess Philpott, the Brewers opened the second half with increased intensity, taking three shots and two corners in the first five minutes of the frame. Less than a minute into the half junior Allison McManis unleashed a close range shot on goal but Philpott made an excellent diving save, knocking the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, sophomore Jordan Crook got a head on McManis's offering and the shot sailed past Philpott but a Bard defender made a goal-saving goal-line stop.

The Brewers continued to press and finally broke through in the 62nd minute when sophomore Tessa Verbanic won a loose ball at the top of the box and sent it past the defense. Crook beat Philpott to the ball and tipped a shot into the right corner of the wide open net for her third goal of the season.

Vassar added another goal with just under 15 minutes to play off a corner kick from junior Elysa Greenberger. The ball bounced off the ground just in front of the goal and senior Anna Robinson out-leaped the crowd to head in her third goal of the season.

The Brewers capped their scoring with 6:20 to play, capitalizing on a three-on-one breakaway. Junior Rachel Shea played the ball through to junior Carolyn Demougeot who made a move on her defender in the box before sending her team-leading sixth goal of the season into the right hand corner of the net.

The Brewers dominated possession in the first half as the Raptors had few trips into Vassar's defensive third. However, Vassar was unable to seriously challenge Philpott. Despite the fact that the Brewers recorded 12 shots, four on goal, few were actually threats to Bard. Vassar did increase the pressure as time wound down in the first half, with four shots and a corner kick.

Vassar outshot Bard, 26-1 on the evening, and held an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks. McManis had four shots, two on goal, while Robinson came off the bench to contribute five shots, one on goal.

Philpott made seven saves in goal and took her first loss of the season to fall to 3-1. Vassar freshman goalie Lexi Hutton remained unbeaten, improving to 3-0 on the season.
