Field Hockey Falls to Union 4-0 in Liberty League Play

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY (September 26, 2009) – Last season, the Vassar field hockey team dealt Union College a 2-1 upset to end a Liberty League winning drought. On Saturday afternoon, the Dutchwomen scored two goals in each half to avenge that loss in a 4-0 victory over the Brewers.

Vassar drops to 2-10, 0-2 in league play while Union improves to 4-3, 2-1. Vassar will play its next game against liberty league opponent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy on Wednesday, September 30 and will then travel to non-league opponent FDU-Florham on Saturday, October 3. Union, which has won back-to-back Liberty League games, travels to Castleton State College on Tuesday, September 29.

The Brewers had a tough offensive start to Liberty League play. On Friday, Vassar managed just five shots on goal against Skidmore and against Union was held to just two shots. Freshman Rebecca Smith and sophomore Emily Maier had the Vassar shots, but not nearly enough offense to offset Union.

The Dutchwomen got on the board just under six minutes into the game when freshman Lauren Winchell scored the first of her two goals off Vassar starting goalie Rachel Horwitz. Her first tally was tucked inside the left post following a scramble in front of the cage. Her second goal in the 25th minute followed an initial save by Horwitz. Winchell got her stick on the loose ball in front of the goal and slipped it into the net for a 2-0 Union lead.

In the game's 44th minute, Tyler Willey increased the Union lead to 3-0 when she took a pass from Andrea Meyers from the baseline to her position at the top of the arc and her low shot found the right side of the goal.

Union's fourth goal in the 61st minute came off freshman goalie Rachel Clarkin-Breslin who replaced Horwitz. Isabel Zellweger notched the tally after her shot from the left corner deflected off a Vassar player in front of the cage.

In 44 minutes of action, Horwitz made six saves for the Brewers and Clarkin-Breslin had three. Dutchwomen goalkeeper Sarah Rios recorded her second shutout in two days and third on the season. Union held a 20-2 margin in shots and a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.
