BRYN MAWR, PA (September 20, 2009) – On Saturday, sophomore Katy Hwang placed a career-high seven shots on goal in a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Wellesley in the Seven Sisters Classic. On Sunday, Hwang had five shots at the Smith College cage, and she made the most of her last attempt. Hwang's goal with 31-seconds remaining in regulation propelled the Brewers to a 1-0 victory over Smith in second-day Seven Sisters Classic action.

After 69 minutes of scoreless field hockey, a loose ball scramble in front of the net with 31 seconds remaining lifted the Brewers to their second win of the season and the end of a three game losing streak. Hwang was able to force the ball into the Smith net and past an outstretched goalie Margaret Winter for a thrilling goal.

But the game did not end without final dramatics. With time expired, a foul by Vassar gave Smith the opportunity to tie the game. Smith's Anika Goodhue was awarded a stroke. After setting up in shooting position, Goodhue sent her shot to the left side of the goal, but Vassar's freshman goalie Rachel Clarkin-Breslin dove and made the biggest save of the tournament to secure the win.

Sophomore Kara Voght helped keep Smith off the board by posting a big defensive save with time winding down, supporting the eight save effort by Clarkin-Breslin.

For their efforts in the two day tournament, both Hwang and Clarkin-Breslin were named to the Seven Sisters All-Classic Team,

Despite only one goal, Vassar was decidedly more offensive around the Smith end. Junior Jessica Lance had four shots, senior Rachel Lowenthal had three attempts at goal, seniors Jordan Friedmann and Jennie McAllister had two each.

For Smith, Phoebe Hopkins took a team-high four shots while Rachel Capute and Goodhue each took three. Winter posted 11 saves.

The Brewers, 2-5, will next host Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday, September 23 at 4:00 p.m.
