Field Hockey Edged By Wellesley 2-1 In Overtime At Seven Sisters Classic

BRYN MAWR, PA (September 19, 2009) – Statistically, the Vassar field hockey team did everything it could to win its opening round game of the Seven Sisters Classic against Wellesley College. The Brewers had their second best shots and shots on goal game of the season and freshman goalie Rachel Clarkin-Breslin stopped a career-high 16 shots, but Wellesley prevailed on the scoreboard, nudging Vassar 2-1 in overtime. In the games 77th minute, Wellesley's Callie Lekas scored the game winner, carrying the ball into the circle and slipping past Clarkin-Breslin. 

Vassar falls to 1-5 on the season and will play Smith College in the second game of the Seven Sisters Classic on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Smith posted a 2-0 victory over Wilson College in its opening game.
Wellesley scored first, with 2:52 remaining in the first half, when Sally Scudder, deflected a shot from teammate Kate Cushing.

The Brewers rallied back in the 42nd minute. Senior Jordan Friedmann tied the game 1-1 when she took a pass from sophomore Maura McCarthy and lifted her shot past Wellesley's goalie Sarina Sawyer to the near post.

Over the next 28 minutes, the game was a back-and-forth see-saw affair. Both teams had several opportunities to break the deadlock, but were unable to punch the ball past either goal. Clarkin-Breslin had nine of her 16 saves in the second half while Sawyer had nine stops for Wellesley. 

Sophomore Katy Hwang had a career-high seven shots for the Brewers and Friedmann added three shots.

Katie Frett -Dale and Lekas had five shots each for Wellesley.
