POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 3, 2009) – On a mud-soaked Senior Day the Vassar College baseball team ended its season with a win, taking the second game of a Liberty League doubleheader against Union College on Sunday at Prentiss Field. Although the Dutchmen picked up a 7-2 win in the opener, the Brewers ended the day on a high note, with a 10-4 win in the second game, which was ended after six innings due to wet field conditions.
The Brewers finish the season 6-29, 3-21 in the Liberty League while the Dutchmen end their season with a 13-20, 7-14 record.
Vassar honored its four seniors,
Tyler Bellstrom,
Zack Miller,
Jeremy Pollack, and
John Snyder, all of whom contributed in the doubleheader.
Game One
A strong performance from starter Joshua McKelligan carried the Dutchmen to a 7-2 win in the opening game. McKelligan went the distance in the seven-inning game, improving to 2-2 as he allowed just five hits and two earned runs, striking out three with one walk.
Starting in his final game, Pollack took the loss as he pitched six and two third innings. Pollack allowed seven hits and seven runs, but just three runs were earned, as five Vassar errors hurt the Brewer cause. He had three strikeouts. Also in his final outing, Snyder relieved Pollack for the final out in the seventh.
Two unearned runs in the third got the Dutchmen on board, and they added two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Brewers made a comeback bid with two outs in the fifth. After a long at-bat, sophomore third baseman
David Ringold knocked a 3-2 pitch into left field for a base hit. Freshman shortstop
Liam Lee and sophomore designated hitter
Charlie Gray followed with singles to load the bases for Miller. Miller came up big on his Senior Day, with a two-run single to right field, cutting Union's lead to 4-2.
The Dutchmen tacked on two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh and McKelligan sent the Brewers down in order in the final two innings en route to the win.
Lee was the only Brewer with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored and Miller chipped in with his two RBI effort.
Game Two
The Brewers scored in every inning they came to bat in the second game, and showed poise as they scored nine of their ten runs with two outs. The Brewer bats knocked out 11 runs and the Brewer defense committed no errors to support Bellstrom in his final start. Bellstrom earned the win, his third of the year, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
After the Brewers scored a run apiece in the first two innings, they gave themselves a comfortable lead with a big third inning. The inning started inconspicuously enough, with two quick outs. However, a standup double from freshman third baseman
Sal Costanzo ignited the Brewer offense as they plated five runs, all unearned, to take a 7-0 lead. Sophomore outfielder
Devon Luongo followed Costanzo onto base after a throw from the Union third baseman sailed over the first baseman's head. Ringold loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, and Lee drew an RBI walk to score Costanzo. Gray and junior outfielder
Adam Murphy followed with two-run singles to round out Vassar's big inning.
Although the Dutchmen put up two runs in the fourth, the Brewers regained their seven run lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Ringold knocked a two-run double to deep centerfield.
The Brewers added their tenth run in the fifth as Gray hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Miller. The Dutchmen added two in the top of the sixth, but with field conditions deteriorating after a period of steady rain, the game was called.
Vassar scored its first two runs of the game after getting leadoff runners on base. In the first, Miller singled through the left side, advanced on a one-out walk, and scored on a two-out RBI base hit from Luongo. In the second, Lee led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Gray, stole third with a headfirst slide, and finally came sliding home on a sacrifice fly from Murphy, his uniform soaked with mud from his trip around the bases.
Murphy was 2-for-2 with three RBIs for the Brewers, while Gray added two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Bubar also had multiple hits and Ringold added two RBIs and a run.
For the Dutchmen, Colin McKelligan had two hits and two runs and Pat Wilson added a hit, two RBIs, and a run. Andy Brown took the loss, allowing seven runs, two earned, on six hits.
