HOBOKEN, NJ (April 29, 2009) – Defensive miscues plagued the Vassar College baseball team on Wednesday evening as the Stevens Institute of Technology capitalized on six Brewer errors to score five unearned runs en route to a 15-8 win at Dobbelaar Field in non-league action. After facing a 5-1 deficit after two innings, the Brewers battled back to edge within two runs in the fourth, but the Ducks maintained the lead and added runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

The Brewer remain winless in their last 11 as they fall to 5-26. Vassar will look to end the season on a high note as it heads to Union College for a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday, before returning home on Sunday for its final matchup of the year, another twin billing against Union. With their seventh straight win, the Ducks improve to 19-17 and look ahead to a doubleheader at No. 24 Ithaca College on Saturday.

The Brewers scored first, as sophomore second baseman Joe Castilla led off the second inning with a double, later coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore third baseman David Ringold. However, Vassar's one-run lead was short lived, as the Ducks answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The first six batters had base hits as Stevens knocked out seven hits in the inning, including two doubles.

Vassar drew within two runs in the top of the third, off RBI singles from junior shortstop Ari Glantz and sophomore outfielder Devon Luongo, but the Ducks responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to regain their four-run advantage. Again, Vassar threatened, as a run-scoring single from junior outfielder Adam Murphy and an RBI groundout from sophomore first baseman Joe Bubar brought the Brewers within two, 7-5, after four innings, but it was as close as they would come.

The Ducks plated three unearned runs in the fifth and added five more runs in the seventh to take a commanding lead. The Brewers did make things interesting in the ninth, however, as Glantz singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and came home off a base hit from freshman catcher Sal Costanzo. Castilla followed with his third double of the game to score Costanzo, and then came home on a sacrifice fly from Luongo, Vassar's first out of the inning. Though the Brewers managed one more hit, a double from freshman outfielder Joe Coniglio, Stevens pitcher T.J. Griffin ended the game with no further damage.

Senior Tyler Bellstrom took the loss, falling to 2-7, giving up five earned runs on nine hits in three innings. Senior reliever Jeremy Pollack pitched three innings of relief, allowing just three hits and three runs, all unearned. Freshman Zachary Prudoff pitched the eighth inning, with an impressive 1-2-3, two strikeout outing.

The Brewers recorded 14 hits in the loss but were 5-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Castilla led the Vassar bats, knocking out three doubles in a 3-for-4, one RBI, two runs scored performance. Costanzo added three hits, an RBI and a run and Coniglio also had three hits and one run. Glantz was 2-for-3 with one RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases and Luongo added two RBIs.
