POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 26, 2009) – The University of Rochester pitching staff again proved formidable, holding Vassar College to one total run in a doubleheader sweep at Prentiss Field on Sunday. Game One
Another strong pitching performance carried the Yellowjackets to an 8-1 win in the first game. Junior Steve Guzski pitched a complete seven-inning game, holding the Brewers to just one run on two hits. Guzski improved to 3-2 as he struck out three with one walk.
Freshman
John MacGregor took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season. In six innings, MacGregor allowed eight runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking four.
Rochester did all its damage in two innings, with a five-run second inning putting the Yellowjackets ahead for good. Dan Brien led off the second with a home run over the left centerfield fence, and the next three Yellowjackets reached. Alex Caghan walked, stole second, and scored on a
Blayne Fuke single and Matt Francis tripled to drive in Fuke. Brian Bezek and Rob Barnard added groundout RBIs to give the Yellowjackets a 5-0 lead.
Brien again jumpstarted the Yellowjackets in the sixth, blasting a leadoff triple to the right center fence and coming around to score on an error by the right fielder. Rochester scored two more in the inning on an RBI triple from Fuke, who then scored on a wild pitch.
The Brewers picked up their run in the sixth as senior leftfielder
Zack Miller hit a leadoff double to center and later came around to score on a groundout off the bat of sophomore first baseman
Joe Bubar.
Fuke was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Brien added two hits, one RBI, and two runs.
Game Two
In the second game of the doubleheader, Vassar was once again stymied by Rochester's pitching, in an 8-0 shutout.
After amassing just five runs in the first three games of the weekend, the Brewers were in need of some hits, but it was Rochester that struck first in the second inning. After Nate Stein led off the inning with a walk, Francis hit a high pop-up to the middle of the infield and a Vassar defensive miscommunication allowed the ball to drop, landing Francis on second base and Stein on third. Casey Storme and Bezek took advantage of the miscue, cracking consecutive RBI singles to give Rochester three runs in the inning.
The Yellowjackets continued to hit, scoring in each of the next three innings including two in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead after five. Six different Rochester hitters had RBIs in that four inning scoring run. Rochester added one more run in the eighth inning, when Bezek scored on a double steal with runners on first and third.
While the Rochester offense provided runs, Yellowjacket starter Michael Park continued to roll. In his first six innings of work, Park allowed just two base runners. Vassar junior shortstop
Ari Glantz hit a two-out triple in the first inning but was stranded on third after a strikeout ended the inning, and freshman third baseman
Sal Costanzo drew a two-out walk in the fourth, but Park again ended the inning with a strikeout.
Vassar finally forced Park out of the game in the ninth when hits by sophomore Bubar and Costanzo put runners on the corners with one out. However, sophomore Nick Cacciola came in and ended the game with no further damage. Park earned the win with 8.1 innings pitched, giving up just four hits and two walks, while striking out seven.
Sophomore
Daniel Berkowitz took the loss for Vassar, going four innings and giving up nine hits, seven runs, six earned, and walking three. Freshman
Dennis Tario came in to pitch three solid innings, scattering two hits and three walks and allowing no runs. Freshman
Zachary Prudoff pitched the final frame for the Brewers, giving up one run on the double steal in the eighth. Eight of Rochester's nine position players had hits on the day, with Fuke, Brien, Stein, Storme, and Bezek all contributing two hits apiece.
