NEW PALTZ, NY (April 15, 2009) – With just two runs scored by either team halfway through Wednesday's non-league baseball matchup between Vassar College and SUNY New Paltz, it looked as though it would be a low-scoring affair. However, the Brewers and the Hawks combined for 23 runs in the final four innings of the game, with New Paltz coming away with a 15-10 win.
After four and a half innings, Vassar held a 2-0 lead, but the Hawks exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth. Although the Brewers managed to tie the game in the top of the eighth, five New Paltz runs in the bottom of the inning proved the difference.
Vassar falls to 5-16, 2-10 in the Liberty League, and splits the season series after defeating New Paltz, 7-3, earlier in the week. The Brewers will travel to Skidmore for a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., and return home for another twin-billing against the Thoroughbreds on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Hawks improve to 8-18.
Although the Brewers pounded out 17 hits on the day, they gave up 19 hits to the Hawks, as every position player on both teams had at least one hit on the day.
Sal Costanzo led the Brewers from the plate going 4-for-5 with one run and five RBIs and
Ari Glantz was 3-for-5 with one run scored.
David Ringold and
Liam Lee each added two hits, one run and one RBI in the loss.
The Brewers held an early 2-0 lead after Costanzo's two-run single in the top of the third scored Glantz and sophomore
Joe Bubar.
In his first career start, senior
Jeremy Pollack held New Paltz scoreless with just four hits through four innings. However, the Hawks opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth, scoring nine runs off seven hits, including a three-run home run from Clinton Boettcher.
Despite the quick 9-2 hole, Vassar did not fold. The Brewers scored three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and four in the eighth, with Costanzo's two-out two-run single scoring junior
Adam Murphy and sophomore
Devon Luongo to tie the game, 10-10.
However, five New Paltz runs in the bottom of the eighth gave the Hawks a lead they would protect, with Paul Merola's RBI double scoring Chris Paulicelli for the game-winning run.
Freshman
Zachary Prudoff took the loss for the Brewers, falling to 1-2 on the season. Sophomore Eric Holzapple earned the victory on the mound allowing one hit and striking two in one and one-third innings of work
