Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

CANTON, NY (April 10, 2009) – Although the Vassar College baseball team pounded out a combined 29 hits in its doubleheader against St. Lawrence University on Friday, the Brewers were swept as the Saints escaped with two five-run victories, 12-7 and 13-8 at Tom Fay Field. The Brewers hit the ball well in both losses, with a combined seven extra base hits, but 16 stranded runners proved costly.

The Brewers fall to 3-14, 1-9 in the Liberty League but have two more chances against the Saints in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. St. Lawrence improves to 9-13, 5-9 in the league.

Freshman third baseman Sal Costanzo went 5-for-9 on the day, with a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs, while former high school teammate sophomore second baseman Joe Castilla was 5-for-9 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a run. Senior outfielder Zack Miller hit his first career home run, as he combined for a 4-for-8 effort with two RBIs and two runs scored in both games.

Game One
Vassar grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on run scoring singles by Costanzo and sophomore catcher David Ringold, but the Saints sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning and took a 9-2 lead. Garrett Fitzgerald had a two-run single and Bryan Brennan had a two-run double as part of the big inning.

Although the Brewers put up a run in the third inning and two in both the fourth and sixth, they could never get closer than four runs as the Saints put together another three runs in the fifth. Four Vassar errors hurt the Brewer effort, as four of the Saints' 12 runs were unearned.

Steve Bodnar went five inning for the win for the Saints with Pat Considine pitching the sixth and seventh while freshman starter Scott Allen took the loss for the Brewers. Vassar senior Jeremy Pollack pitched five and two thirds inning of solid relief, allowing just two earned runs on three hits, with four strikeouts and no walks.

Castilla was 3-for-4 and Costanzo had two hits and drove in three runs for the Brewers, and Miller knocked out his first career-round tripper, a two RBI shot in the fourth inning. The Brewers out-hit the Saints 13-8 in the game, but left eight runners stranded.

Game Two
Although Vassar carried a 6-5 lead into the seventh in the second game, St. Lawrence's Tim Harris tripled in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and then scored the go-ahead run. The Saints tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 13-8 win to complete the sweep.

The Brewers scored in the first three innings, taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the third. The Saints scored four in the bottom of that inning, but both pitchers locked down following that. Vassar starter Daniel Berkowitz held the Saints scoreless for the next three innings, however St. Lawrence responded with a combined eight runs in the seventh and the eighth off Berkowitz and freshman Dennis Tario.

Following Vassar's five runs in the first three innings, St. Lawrence starter Sean Voss held the Brewers scoreless, exiting after seven innings and earning the win after Matt Landers notched the save with two innings of relief.

The Brewers hit the ball well again, with 16 hits, but also stranded eight. Junior shortstop Ari Glantz and Costanzo led Vassar in the game with three hits apiece.
