RPI, the defending Liberty League champion, extended its winning streak to ten and remained unbeaten in the Liberty League as it pounded out 41 hits on the day in 14-3 and 24-5 wins.
Having lost six straight, the Brewers fall to 2-10, 1-5 in the Liberty League. RPI improves to 11-4, 5-0 in the league. The Brewers and Red Hawks will face off for another doubleheader on Tuesday, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Troy. Game One
In the first game, RPI opened up an 8-0 lead behind a seven-run, seven-hit second inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, senior Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) and Reardon hit back-to-back RBI singles, followed by a single up the middle from Mamigonian that drove in two more runs. Junior Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice) drove in two of his own with a hard-hit double to center field before scoring on a fielder's choice from freshman Art Levenson (San Diego, CA/ University City).
Vassar was able to get on the board in the third with back to back singles from Bubar and Miller to start the inning. Both runners advanced on an error before freshman Joseph Coniglio (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) grounded to second to score Bubar.
The Brewers put up two more runs in the fifth inning, as Bubar walked and Miller doubled up the middle to start the inning before Murphy blasted a triple to center to score both Bubar and Miller. Vassar was unable to rally, however, and the Red Hawks scored four runs in the top of the seventh to put away the game.
The Red Hawks were led offensively by Reardon, who went 3-3 with two RBIs and three runs, including a home run in the third. Mamigonian also contributed with four RBI's and two runs of his own, while Krushelnyski went 2-3 with three RBI's and two runs.
Miller led the Brewers at the plate going 2 for 3 and scoring a run, while Bubar was 1 for 2 with a walk and scored two runs. Murphy was 1 for 3 with a triple and had 2 RBI's.
RPI senior starter Andy Opperman (Oneida, NY/ Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) improved to 3-0, giving up just three runs on four hits in seven innings. Opperman struck out five and walked just two batters. For the Brewers, freshman
Scott Allen (Peapack, NJ/New Fairfield) fell to 0-2, giving up nine earned runs on ten hits in five innings.
Game Two
The Red Hawks again started things off quickly in the nightcap, plating nine runs on seven hits in the first inning. Vassar did not record an out in the inning until RPI's ninth hitter came to bat. The Red Hawks batters found their spots in the field, as six of seven hits were singles, with Reardon's two-RBI double the only extra base hit in the inning.
Although the Brewers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, off RBI singles from Costanzo and
Charlie Gray (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair Kimberley), three more Red Hawk runs in the top of the second inning gave RPI a substantial lead the Brewers could never cut into.
Starter Andrew Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) improved to 3-0 in an 11-strikeout performance. The senior pitched five and two-thirds innings, scattering ten hits and allowing five earned runs with no walks. Sophomore starter
Daniel Berkowitz (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) took the loss for the Brewers, falling to 0-3.
Devine had an impressive performance in the second game, going 5-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs. Mamigonian and junior Tom Jebb (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) recorded four hits apiece.
For the Brewers, Coniglio, Bubar, Gray, and Miller all notched two hits apiece.
