Game Two Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 22, 2009) – Over the course of two games, the Clarkson University baseball team scored a run in all but three innings as it swept Vassar College in a Liberty League doubleheader at Prentiss Field on Sunday. In the first game the Brewer offense struggled against a strong performance from starting pitcher David Goerold (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), who picked up the complete seven-inning game win, as Clarkson recorded a 9-3 victory. In the nightcap, Vassar held an early lead but a five run fourth inning boosted the Golden Knights to a 16-5 win.
The Brewers fall to 2-7, 1-3 after going 1-3 over the weekend. Vassar travels to Mount Saint Mary College for a 4:00 p.m. matchup on Wednesday, looking to avenge a tough 18-17 loss on March 18. The Golden Knights improve to 7-6, 3-1.
Game One
Goerold earned his first win of the season, as he pitched Clarkson to its victory in the opening game. The sophomore right-hander allowed no earned runs on five hits, with six strikeouts and one walk. Goerold carried a no-hitter into the fifth, and a shutout into the final and seventh inning. The Brewers took advantage of three Clarkson errors in the seventh inning, scoring three two-out runs thanks to a two RBI single off the bat of freshman Joseph Coniglio (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and an RBI single from sophomore
Joe Bubar (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day).
Freshman starter
Scott Allen (Peapack, NJ/New Fairfield) took the loss in his first collegiate start. With the score tied at 0-0 with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Allen nearly escaped the inning unscathed. Clarkson senior Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) hit a soft grounder back to the mound that Allen calmly fielded and sent home for the force out. Catcher
David Ringold (Seattle, WA/Ballard) then fired the ball to first for the 1-2-3 double play. However, the following batter, cleanup hitter Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY/Mexico) knocked a pitch into shallow centerfield for a two RBI double. In the following inning, the Knights chased Allen with five runs on one hit and the Brewers were unable to make up the distance against Goerold
Game Two
After the Knights struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second, the Brewers tied the game in the top of the third. Senior
Zack Miller (San Francisco, CA/Lick Wilmerding) led off the inning with a single to right field, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice fly from junior
Adam Murphy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood), and came home on an error by the Clarkson first baseman.
Clarkson regained the lead with another run in the bottom of the inning, but again Vassar answered on RBIs from Murphy and Coniglio. However, Clarkson starter Rick Bittner (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) escaped serious damage, inducing an inning ending fly-out with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the inning, the Knights scored five runs on two hits and one error, and never looked back, scoring at least one run in the remaining four innings.
Bittner (2-0) earned the win, scattering eight hits with four runs, one earned, over five innings. Sophomore
Daniel Berkowitz (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) took the loss for the Brewers, falling to 0-2.
The Brewers recorded ten hits, but stranded eight runners. Coniglio (5-for-9, three RBI on the day) led the way, going 3-for-5 with one RBI. Castilla was 2-for-5, while Bubar, Lee, Miller,
Sal Costanzo (Cooper City, FL/Archbishop McCArthy) and
Mike Plude (Shelton, CT/Notre Dame Catholic) all had one hit apiece.
