Fourth Quarter Push Not Enough For Men's Lax In 8-6 Loss

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (March 17, 2009) -- Christoper Newport University scored three goals in a seven minute span of the third period to break open a tight game against the Vassar men's lacrosse team, and fought off a three goal fourth period by the Brewers to escape with an 8-6 victory on Tuesday evening in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Brewers, 2-3 on the season, will play their final spring break trip contest this Friday, March 20, at Widener University against Newmann College at 7:00 p.m. Christoper Newport improves to 4-2 and hosts Hood College on Saturday evening.

The Brewers went toe-to-toe with the Captains, and only the offensive surge by the hosts earned them the victory. Following a goal by sophomore midfielder Sam Seymour (Winchester, MA/Winchester) that brought Vassar within a goal at 4-3, Christoper Newport tallied three straight goals in a 7:10 span to increase its lead to 7-3. The Captains got goals from sophomore midfielder Justin King (Crofton, MD/Spalding), freshman Rob Koster (Vienna, VA/Oakton) and freshman attack John Glaser (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) during that stretch to break open a tight game.

Vassar opened the fourth period with a purpose, getting two goals from junior midfielder Nick Cardillo (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) and Seymour's second of the game to draw within two goals, 7-5, with 11:04 to play. The game went scoreless for 5:30 until King notched his second tally of the game with 5:29 to play, pushing the Captains ahead 8-5.

Cardillo made the game interesting with his man-up goal, his second of the contest, with 2:26 to play.

The Brewers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead to start the game, after sophomore attack Sam Thypin-Bermeo (Princeton, NJ/Hun School)scored one minute into the contest and senior midfielder Ross McKenzie (Hewlett, NY/Jewlett) followed two minutes later. Christoper Newport answered with four straight goals, three in the final nine minutes of the first period and one tally four minutes into the third period. Neither team scored in the second period.

The Brewers parlayed their goalies, starting sophmore Alex Tice (Oakland, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) and junior Ed Pappo (Malvern, PA/Conestoga). Pappo suffered the defeat, allowing six goals. Freshman Tyler Jackson(Culpeper, VA/Culpeper) made six saves in goal for the Captains.

The battle of the field was basically even with Christoper Newport holding a 28-24 advantage in ground ball. The Captains outshot the Brewers 32-21 and were successful on 12-18 faceoffs, compared to Vassar at 6-18.
