Parks and Tempora Combine for 42 in Women's Basketball Loss to Drew

Box Score

MADISON, NJ (February 3, 2009) – An 11-1 run by Drew University late in the second half broke open a tie game, as the Vassar College women's basketball team dropped a 78-66 non-conference game at Baldwin Gym on Tuesday evening. Shining in the loss was the Vassar freshman duo of Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA/Escondido) and Kristyn Tempora (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) who combined for 42 points. Parks erupted for a career-high 22 points, on the strength of four three-pointers, eclipsing her previous high of 16 points while Tempora chipped in with 20 points, 18 coming in the back-and-forth second half.

In their final non-conference game of the season, the Brewers fall to 3-15. They host a Liberty League double header this weekend, playing William Smith on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Hamilton on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Rangers improve to 10-9.

Although the Rangers held a ten-point lead early in the second half, the Brewers refused to allow it to balloon, and a Tempora old fashioned three-point play with 9:52 to play gave Vassar a 48-47 lead. Over the next 5:14, Tempora scored scored 11 of Vassar's 14 points as the Brewers and the Rangers traded leads. The freshman forward converted a layup with 4:38 to play to give Vassar another one-point lead, 61-60. However, a free throw by Ranger Jessica Del Vecchio tied the game for the eighth and final time, as Drew went on an 11-1 run to take a 72-62 lead with 1:44 to play. A Carolyn Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading) three-pointer cut the lead to seven, but it was as close as the Brewers would come.

The first half was evenly-played though the Rangers held the lead for the final ten minutes. A Crampton three-pointer brought Vassar within one, 24-23, with 6:08 remaining in the half, but an old-fashioned three-point play and a traditional three-pointer from Del Vecchio gave the Rangers a more comfortable advantage, and a Victoria Ault layup in the final minute afforded Drew a 36-28 lead heading into the locker room.

Parks, who scored eight of Vassar's first 12 points, also blocked a career high three shots, matched a career high with four steals, and dished out four assists on the evening. Along with Tempora and Parks, two other Brewers scored in double figures, as junior Emily Haeuser scored 12 points to go with a team high eight rebounds, and Crampton added 10 points.

Drew was led by a game high 28 points from Jessica Del Vecchio. The Rangers dominated in the paint, outscoring Vassar 38-14.
