Vassar Drops Home Finale to Union, 87-49

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 14, 2009) – Behind four scorers in double figures, Union College cruised to an 87-49 women's basketball victory over Vassar College at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Saturday in Vassar's final home game of the year. Vassar freshman guard Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA/Escondido) led all scorers with 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field while Union was led by 18 points from Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY/ Bishop Maginn).

The loss drops Vassar to 3-19, 0-11 in the Liberty League. The Brewers will travel to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Tuesday, where they will seek their first league win. Union strengthens its lead in the Liberty League, improving to 16-6, and 10-2 in the league.

Tobin caught fire in the second half, scoring 13 of her 18 points. In the first half, it was Lauren McCormick (Hoosick Falls, NY/ Catholic Central) with the hot hand for the Dutchwomen, scoring all 14 of her points on a 7-for-11 effort from the field. Also landing in double figures were Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting, and Megan Clark (Wilbraham, MA/ Minnechaug Regional) with 12 points off the bench.

Needing four boards to reach 500 career rebounds, Rogers did just that, making her the 12th Dutchwoman to reach the milestone. After scoring her 1,000th career point last night again RPI, Rogers becomes just the seventh Union women's basketball player to accumulate 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

In the loss, Vassar was led by Parks and junior forward Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland). Parks scored 12 of her 22 points in the second half, shooting 3-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Haeuser scored 13 points for the Brewers, with a 9-for-9 effort from the line. She also recorded seven rebounds and six blocks.

Union jumped out to a big lead with 8-0 and 10-0 runs in the first half, giving the Dutchwomen a 42-24 lead heading into the locker room. Union went into the locker room with a 42-24 halftime lead.

Prior to the game, Vassar honored senior Shannon Fuhr (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor), playing in her final home game.
