DANBURY, CT (December 8, 2009) – Although the Vassar College women's basketball team held a 9-8 lead seven minutes into a non-league matchup with Western Connecticut University on Tuesday, the Brewers scored just one basket over the next eight minutes and the Colonials rattled off 13 points during the same period to take a double-digit lead they would never relinquish as Vassar dropped a 73-47 decision at Feldman Arena.
The Brewers conclude the semester with a 2-5 record and will open 2010 with a road matchup against John Jay College on January 11 at 5:00 p.m. The Colonials improve to 5-2.
Although WestConn jumped out to a quick six point lead, 8-2, three minutes into the game, the Brewers responded to tie the game thanks to six straight points from sophomore
Brittany Parks, off a three-pointer, jump-shot, and free throw. Vassar then took a 9-8 lead with 12:49 remaining in the half off a free throw from freshman
Tori Chaltain, but the game quickly slipped out of grasp from that point.
The Colonials reeled off nine straight points, with four coming from Karli Spera, and eventually ballooned the lead to 23-11 off a lay-up from Melissa Teel with 4:48 remaining in the half. Although Vassar cut a 15-point deficit to 11 heading into the locker room thanks to two free throws from sophomore
Kristyn Tempora and a lay-up from Parks, it was as close as the Brewers would come for the remainder of the game.
Parks scored ten of her game-high 17 points in the first half. Senior
Emily Haeuser also reached double-digits for Vassar with ten points, to go with eight rebounds and a game-high five steals, and Chaltain added ten points as well.
The Colonials placed four players in doubles figures, paced by Teel's 16-point, 16-rebound, six-block performance. Katie Moffo chipped in with 15 points, followed by Nicole Eanniello (12 points), and Heather Lee (11 points, four assists). Spera racked up a game-high eight assists.
WestConn held a large advantage in bench points, 23-2, and shot 8-for-16 from behind the arc while the Brewers were just 1-for-10.
