Box Score
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (December 5, 2009) – Williams College senior guard Blake Schultz single-handedly make sure any thoughts the Vassar men's basketball team had in pulling off an upset on Saturday evening would quickly be dashed. In a 34-point performance, Schultz connected on 6 of 7 three-point shots in the first half and 8 for 10 in the game, to lead the Ephs to a 111-74 victory over the Brewers at Chandler Gymnasium.
Vassar drops to 2-5 and will next travel to Hunter College on December 9 for a 6:00 p.m. game. Williams improves to 6-0 and hosts Framingham State on December 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Schultz was a one-man wrecking crew, connecting on 11 of 13 field goals, eight of which came from long distance. He was the catalyst behind Williams making an opponent-high 14 three-pointers in the game, nine of which came in the first half. To start the contest, seven of the Ephs first eight baskets came off three-pointers, four courtesy of Schultz.
Williams wasted little time establishing itself. The Ephs built a 22-6 lead following a three-pointer from sophomore guard James Wang with 12:30 play in the first half and kept piling on the points against a Brewers team that was playing its third nationally ranked team in seven games.
Behind 24 points from Schultz, the Ephs held a comfortable 59-23 halftime lead, scoring 27 points off three-pointers, 16 tallies off Vassar turnovers and holding a commanding 27-10 rebounding advantage.
The Brewers opened the second half with a 13-7 run keyed by freshman
Jon Herzog and sophomore's
Nick Justiz and
David de la Torre. Herzog finished with a career-high 14 points and a team-leading six rebounds. Justiz played a spirited 30 minutes and contributed 10 points with only two turnovers and de la Torre led the Brewers with a career-high 18 points in a contest that saw him reach double figures for the first time in his career. Sophomore
Caleb McGraw tallied 15 points, 13 coming of them coming in the second half.
After the Brewers jumped out to a 13-7 run to start the second half – making the score 66-38 – the Ephs called a quick timeout, regrouped and went on a 12-0 streak that stymied any Brewers comeback effort. The final ten minutes saw Vassar and Williams trading baskets in a half that saw the Brewers score a season-high 51 second half points.
Outside of Schultz, no other Ephs player reached double figures, but a deep Williams roster that features 19 players, saw 17 of those athletes land in the scoring column. Wang had nine points and sophomore guard Jordan Mickens also had nine points. Williams shot 62 percent for the game and 48 percent from 3-point distance. Bench play accounted for 53 of Williams' points and the Ephs held a 46-24 rebounding advantage. Senior Joe Geoghegan led all rebounders with 11.
