Field Hockey Toppled By St. Lawrence In Final League Game, 3-0

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 25, 2009) – For the first half, the Vassar College field hockey team played nationally-ranked and Liberty League leading St. Lawrence to a standstill, but the Saints broke through the defensive struggle with an early second half goal and tacked on two more tallies en route to a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

The Brewers, now 2-16, 0-7, conclude their Liberty League season and will play the season finale at home on October 27 at 5:00 p.m. against Scranton. The Saints improve to 12-3, 6-1 and next host Cortland on Wednesday, October 28 before playing in the Liberty League Tournament.

The first half was a test of defensive will, but the Saints changed the games dynamic in the 38th minute when junior forward Brooke Maloney broke the scoreless tie with a give-and-go goal off an assist from senior forward Joss-Elyse Smith.

St. Lawrence tacked on its second goal in the 47th minute when junior forward Caitlin Estes collected the ball following a shot from senior midfielder Jennifer Stetson that was saved by Vassar goalie Rachel Horwitz. Estes took the rebound and adeptly slid in past the Brewer goalie for a 2-0 lead. Stetson broke into the scoring column with just over a minute remaining when she capitalized off a rebound following a penalty corner.

The Brewers managed nine shots in the game, four on goal. Two of those scoring opportunities came late in the second half when senior forward Jennie McAllister and sophomore forward Maura McCarthy had back-to-back shots that Saints senior goalie Emilie Lannamann saved. Lannamann also made a pinpoint stop off a shot by Vassar junior midfielder Jessica Lance with 3:34 to play. It would be the last time the Brewers tested the Saints goalie in the game.

St. Lawrence had 21 shots in the game and held a 17-10 advantage in penalty corners.
