Women's Soccer Downed by Union, 4-0

SCHENECTADY, NY (October 10, 2009) – The Union College women's soccer team netted two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 win over Vassar College on a windy afternoon at College Park on Saturday.

The loss drops the Brewers to 5-7, 1-4 in the Liberty League. Vassar returns to action with a non-league home game against Elmira College, next Saturday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. The Dutchwomen extend their winning streak to six and improve to 10-3, 4-0 in the league and will now hit the road for three games starting at Skidmore College on October 17 at 1:00 p.m.

Union senior Katie Weinstein scored two unassisted goals in four minutes and made an assist lead the Dutchwomen to the win. Union got off to a hot start offensively, however the first goal did not come until the 21st minute when Weinstein's free kick from the left side of the goal box put the ball into the right side of the goal.

The Brewers nearly responded directly following the goal, but junior Carolyn Demougeot's shot hit the right post.

Three minutes later, after a tackle by the Vassar goalkeeper forced a penalty kick, Weinstein took a shot to the right side of the goal and gave the Dutchwomen a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, Weinstein crossed the ball to the goal box for junior Katie McLean to quickly one touch the ball into the goal and give the Dutchwomen a 3-0 lead. It is also McLean's team-leading eighth goal on the season.

Union's fourth goal came in the 56th minute when freshman Michaela Katz scored her second goal on the season about 30 yards away from the goal line.

Junior goalkeeper Abby Stohler played a solid 70 minutes before freshman Kayla Marti came in and relieved her. Union out shot Vassar 24-4. Freshman Keiko Kurita led Vassar with two shots. Vassar's freshmen goalies Ali Higgins and Lexi Hutton each played one half in net, with Higgins recording four saves and Hutton three.
