CHICAGO, IL (January 7, 2009) – A 10-0 run by North Park University in the second half midway through the second half proved the difference as the Vassar College women's basketball team dropped a 59-45 decision on Wednesday evening in the second game of its winter break trip to Chicago. Junior
Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) led Vassar with 11 points, 15 rebounds, and three steals, while freshman
Kristyn Tempora (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.
The Brewers fall to 1-7 and next play at Hunter College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Vikings improve to 3-7.
The Vikings carried a four-point lead into the second half, and held the advantage for the first 4:29. However, the Brewers took the lead on the strength of an 8-0 run, thanks to Tempora. The freshman forward accounted for seven points during the run, as she scored three consecutive baskets including a three-pointer with 15:09 to play that gave Vassar a 34-31 lead. However, the Vikings countered with a 10-0 run, taking a lead they would not relinquish. Although a freshman
Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA/Escondido) three-pointer with 5:58 to play brought the Brewers within four, it was the closest Vassar would come as North Park opened up a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. A Viking three-pointer with six seconds to play gave North Park its largest lead of the game, at 59-43, with a Parks jumper accounting for the final 59-45 score.
The first half was a back and forth affair. Neither team led by more than four points, and not until the final sixteen seconds of the half when a Viking three-pointer gave North Park a 26-22 lead.
Foul shooting proved a crucial factor in the game, as the Brewers shot 9-for-19 (47.4 percent) compared to the Vikings' 18-for-22 (81.8 percent).
Parks added nine points and three assists for the Brewers, and sophomore
Jenica Law (Palo Alto, CA/Henry M. Gunn) chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.
North Park's Amanda Phillips led all scorers with 17 points.
