CLINTON, NY (January 15, 2009) –Hindered by a slow start, with just 15 points in the first half, the Vassar College women's basketball team dropped its Liberty League opener, 57-39, to Hamilton College on Friday evening. Three players scored in double figures, paced by
Kristyn Tempora's (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) game-high 15 points.
The Brewers fall to 2-8, 0-1 in the Liberty League. They will complete their league weekend at William Smith College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Continentals improve to 7-4 (1-1), and will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tomorrow.
Vassar played Hamilton even in the second half, as both teams scored 24 in the final frame. The Brewers made things interesting, by going on an 18-4 second half run, sparked by 13 points from Tempora. Tempora drained three three-pointers, sank a jumper, and hit two free throws in the span of just over eight minutes to reduce her team's 24-point deficit to ten points, with 7:20 remaining in the game. However, the Continentals went on a 9-1 run to close out the contest, cementing their first Liberty League win.
In the first half, the Brewers struggled from the field, shooting just 14.8 percent. Vassar kept the game close for the first eleven and a half minutes, as two free throws from freshman
Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA/Escondido) brought the Brewers to within six, 19-13, with 8:27 to play in the half. But Vassar would not score again until Tempora sank two free throws with 18 seconds left in the half, as the Continentals ended the period with a 14-2 run.
Parks added 10 points in the game, and junior
Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) chipped in with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, her sixth of the season. Sophomore
Carolyn Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading) grabbed eight rebounds.
The Continentals also placed three players in doubles digits, led by sophomore Lisa Olszewski's (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) 12 points. Senior Sydney Fasulo (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Country Day School) and senior Sarah Schrader (Rangeley, ME/Rangeley Lakes Regional School) added 11 and ten points, respectively.
