NYU Hands Women's Soccer 5-1 Loss

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 19, 2008) – The New York University women's soccer team unleashed three goals in the final six minutes to turn a close one-goal game into a 5-1 victory over Vassar College on Friday at Prentiss Field. Five different players scored as the Violets managed to outshoot Vassar 28-9.

The loss drops the Brewers to 3-2-0. Vassar hosts Purchase College tomorrow at 2 p.m. in their final game before beginning Liberty League play next weekend. The Violets improve to 5-2 and begin a three-game home-stand on Saturday as they host Wilkes University.

Facing a two-goal deficit heading into the second-half, the Brewers made things interesting in the 60th minute. Sophomore Allison McManis (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) served a beautiful corner kick into the NYU box and it looked like Vassar would get a goal out of it, but Carolyn Demougeot's (Potomac, MD/French International) header bounced down off the crossbar in front of the goal line. However, in the Violets' ensuing attempt to clear the ball, an NYU defender was called for a dangerous play, giving the Brewers an indirect kick inside the box. Freshman Jordan Crook (Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) played the ball to McManis who unleashed a perfectly-placed shot into the right-side netting to cut the NYU lead to one goal.

Both teams battled back and forth for the next 24 minutes and it looked as if it would be a nail-biter to the end. However, in the 85th minute sophomore Filiz Kipcakli (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber) beat her defender into the box and laid a pass off to a wide open Laura Palumbo (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall Academy) who converted the close range shot to give NYU a 3-1 edge.

The Violets did not stop there, as just over a minute later Kipcakli again managed to get past the Vassar defense. This time Kipcakli uncorked the shot herself, netting her fourth goal of the season. NYU added their fifth goal with less than two and a half minutes remaining, again thanks to Kipcakli. The sophomore forward sent a point-blank shot at Brewer keeper Anne Hutchinson (St. Pete Beach, FL/Tampa Preparatory) who came up with the difficult block. However, the rebound bounced to Lucy Dolly Caires (Honolulu, HI/Iolani School) who sent it back into the net for the final 5-1 outcome.

Hutchinson, who saw a variety of close-range shots directed at her, played well in goal with nine saves.

Brewer Nola Solomon (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) had a solid day in the midfield, setting up opportunities for her teammates. Solomon nearly helped get the Brewers on board with 14:37 to play in the first half as she sent a cross to sophomore Sarah Strange (Houston, TX/Second Baptist School). Strange got a good shot on goal but Violet keeper Alex Walters (Babylon, NY/Babylon) recovered to fall on the ball. Solomon nearly netted one herself early in the second half as she lofted an arching shot towards the goal from beyond the box. It appeared to be heading over Walters' head into the net, but NYU defender Katie Gaston (Benbrook, TX/Paschal) came up with a big save at the goal line.

The Violets dominated the first half as the trio of Kipcalki, Sarah Pillemer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), and Emily Jenkinson (Concord, CA/Carondelet) kept the Brewer defense buys. Pillemer got the Violets on board in the 12th minute. The senior forward collected a pass from Jenkinson and maneuvered around a charging Vassar defender on the end-line to set herself up for a point-blank shot on goal, giving Hutchinson little chance to make a save.

NYU netted its second goal with just under a minute left in the half. Junior Erin Twomey (North Tustin, CA/Foothill) sent a cross through the box from the right side and Jenkinson managed to poke a shot in at the post.

Kipcalki led the Violets with ten shots, seven on goal, while Jenkinson contributed four and Caires chipped in with three. Solomon and Strange had two shots apiece for the Brewers.
