POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 16, 2008) -- Senior back
Emily Fare (Guilford, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall), scored only the second and third goals of her career -- and the first since her freshman season -- but they were critical ones, as the Vassar field hockey team defeated Ramapo College, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
The win improves Vassar to 2-3, with a home game to follow against Mount Holyoke at 2:00 pm on September 20. Ramapo, now 1-4, will travel to Aurora, NY for a meeting with Wells College on September 20.
After a scoreless first half in which each team had few scoring chances, the Brewers broke out first in the second half, when Fare thread herself through the middle of the Ramapo defense and snuck her first goal of the sesaon past Roadrunners starter Meg Tierney (Wayne, NJ/Wayne).
The Roadrunners made an immediate goal switch, inserting freshman Kristine Adams (Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton) into the game, and the contest went scoreless for the next twenty minutes until Fare scored the game's second goal, handling a pass from senior
Jessie Albert (West Hartford, CT/William H. Hall), whose initial shot was saved by Adams and then flicked to Fare.
Ramapo senior Sarah Warner (Atlantic Highlands, NJ/Henry Hudson) made the game interesting with just over 7 minutes to play when she scored a nifty goal in the crease off Vassar sophomore goalie
Rachel Horwitz (Beverly Hills, CA/Harvard-Westlake), who replaced starter
Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central).
The Brewers were able to get the all-important insurance goal with under nine minutes to play from junior
Jordan Friedmann (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker), off a give-and-go feed from Fare.
Vassar's sophomore
Jessica Lance (Enfield, CT/Enfield) and Friedmann had several down field rushes in the first half, but were unable to get a shot on goal. Ramapo senior Ashley Zimmerman (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) and junior Mackenzie Cahill (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pequanock) both had back-to-back shots against Herman in the first half that were adeptly saved, ensuring the 0-0 intermission tie.
Vassar placed only four of its 12 shots on goal. Ramapo was more accurate, taking seven shots and getting four on net. Vassar held an 8-6 lead on penalty corners.
