POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 30, 2008) -– SUNY New Paltz senior pitcher Zachary Potter (Pine Plains, NY) tossed a complete game, two-hit gem in leading the Hawks to a 4-2 win over Vassar in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday afternoon at Prentiss Field. Potter went nine full innings, striking out 13 Brewer hitters in winning his seventh game of the season against one defeat.
The Brewers, who jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, are now 8-20 on the season. New Paltz, which swept the two-game series against their cross river rivals, improve to 21-19.
In preparation for its final two Liberty League doubleheaders of the season against Union College this Saturday in Poughkeepsie and Sunday in Schenectady, the Brewers used six different pitchers who scattered ten hits. Senior
Dan Orme (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) took the loss for Vassar, allowing the Hawks to score two runs in the top of the third inning.
Both of Vassar's runs, in the first and fifth innings, were superbly manufactured, enabling the Brewers to keep the game tight despite the impressive performance by Potter. In the first inning, freshman
Joe Castilla (Weston, FL/Archbishop McCarthy) walked, stole second and was brought home by senior
Mike Murn (Huntington, NY/Harborfields), who singled sharply to right field.
New Paltz answered in the top of the second inning, loading the bases on a walk and a pair of bunt base hits. Junior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY) came home on a double play ball off the bat of senior Robert Helf (Peconic, NY).
The Hawks took the lead in the third with two runs. Three hits, two of which were doubles by senior Neal Rosengren (White Plains, NY) and senior Kevin Paino (Wappingers Falls, NY) were the key blows in the inning, which combined with a Vassar error that allowed Paino to score, were all the runs Potter needed. Orme did induce a fielders choice out with the bases loaded to limit any further New Paltz runs.
Vassar was able to get within a run in the bottom of the fifth inning in much the same fashion as the first inning. Senior
Clancy Philbrick (Stonington, CT/The Williams School) walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a perfect sacrifice from junior
Tyler Bellstrom (Townshend, VT/Leland & Gray Union). He advanced to third on a ground out and was brought home by a timely single to center field from sophomore
Adam Murphy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood).
With the score 3-2, Potter was masterful from that point, shutting out the Brewers over the next four innings.
New Paltz added an unearned insurance run in the eighth inning off senior
Nick Bell (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) that was orchestrated by senior Doug Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY), who led off the inning with a single (one of his three hits in the game), and scored on a three base throwing error.
New Paltz got two hits in the game from senior Jesse Marsh (Marlboro, NY).
