POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 23, 2008) -- What appeared to be a game that would be decided on pitching and defense became a high scoring contest that ultimately came down to costly miscues. In the end, Stevens Institute capitalized on five Vassar errors that led to 13 unearned runs in a 13-10 victory over the Brewers Wednesday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
Vassar, which looked sharp in the first three innings, falls to 7-16 on the season. Stevens improves to 7-23. Each team banged out 13 hits in the contest, but the five Vassar errors enabled Stevens take control of a game in which the fourth, fifth and six innings decided its outcome. Stevens didn't score a run in five of the game's nine innings, but tallied 13 runs in the middle portion of the game.
The fourth and fifth innings were the game's turning points. With Vassar senior starting pitcher
Nick Bell (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) sailing alone with a one-hitter after three, Stevens scored two unearned runs with two outs to even the game at 2-2. Vassar responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs in a rally initiated by sophomore
Adam Murphy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) who singled to start the inning.
With the Brewers holding a 4-2 lead heading into the top of the fifth, three miscues led to a seven run Stevens inning and the end of Bell's then-gem of a piching effort. He was knocked out of the game following a single by Stevens' Anthony Andrews (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) that put Stevens ahead 5-4. Stevens would score four more runs that inning, two that belonged to Bell and two by reliever
Jeremy Pollack (Mililani, HI/Punahou School) who hit a pair of batters in the inning that enabled the Ducks to keep the inning alive.
The Brewers would not be outdone and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 9-7. A two-run RBI single by sophomore
Ari Glantz (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) was the key blow for the Brewres. Glantz continued his hot bat with two hits and 3 RBI.
The sixth inning saw the game's last scoring with seven total runs scored, four by Stevens. Stevens was able to punctuate its victory when sophomore Mark Rasulo (Irvington, NY/Irvington) blasted a triple to right center that brought home three runners, two of which were aboard due to a Vassar error and hit batsmen.
The Brewers were able to close the gap to 13-10 in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting their own triple off Murphy's bat that brought home freshman
Joe Bubar (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) and junior
Zack Miller (San Francisco, CA/Lick-Wilmerding). A single by freshman
David Ringold (Seattle, WA/Ballard) brought home Murphy.
From that point, the game went scoreless over the next three innings, with only five total hits split between the teams.
Bell took the loss for Vassar while senior Amando Suarez (Long Valley, NJ/W. Morris Central) picked up his first win of the year. Glantz, Bubar and Murphy all had two hits for Vassar, as did freshman catcher
Mike Plude (Shelton, CT/Notre Dame Catholic), one of which was a deep triple to the right-center field gap.
Rasulo and Andrews had a pair of hits for the Ducks. Teammates Denis Ackerman (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford), Dan Silva (Booton Township, NJ/Mountain Lakes) and Matt Gimys (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) also had two hits. Rasulo, Silva and Gimys each had three RBI.
Vassar will host Liberty League opponent St. Lawrence this Friday and Saturday in doubleheader action.
