Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Skidmore

First Game Box Score

Second Game Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 20, 2008) -- After losing a 5-1 pitcher's duel in game one, the Brewers beat Skidmore in a back-and-forth high-scoring 11-9 affair. Led by the offensive and defensive efforts of senior Mike Murn, Vassar snapped its five game losing skid with their win in the second game of the twinbill.

The Brewers are now 7-15 overall and 2-13 in Liberty League play. The Thoroughbreds are 9-7 and 17-10.

Game One

After playing Vassar to a 1-1 tie over the first four innings, Skidmore picked up four runs in the final three frames to take control of the opener. Shortstop Adam Brown (Morrisonvile, NY/Beekmantown) broke the tie with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Brown went 3-3 in the game with a pair of RBI.

Sophomore southpaw Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) scattered seven hits in the complete game win, allowing just the one run. He struck out six and did not allow a walk.

Game Two

The Brewers took an 8-3 to the Brewers over the first six innings of the second game. In the seventh, Skidmore loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a call of catcher's interference. Third baseman Jake Mendell (St. George, VT/Champlain Valley Union) drove in a run with his single, and Marcus added a second run on a sacrifice fly to right. Murn (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) saved an extra-base hit on the latter play, snagging the ball with a sprawling dive towards center.

The Skidmore bats continued to hit in the eighth inning. Brown drove in a run on a double to left, but was cut down advancing to the third. Catcher Matt Pisani would drive in another run with a double of his own, and he came around to tie the score at 8 on a triple by Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, NJ/Loomis Chaffee). Ferri would soon break the tie by scoring on a bases-loaded walk. The Brewers escaped further damage when reliever Joe Bubar (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) induced a ground ball double play.

Vassar rallied in the bottom of the inning, with Adam Murphy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) leading off with a single. Murphy moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and tied the score at 9 on a double by shortstop Joe Castilla (Weston, FL/Archbishop McCarthy). An intentional walk to Ari Glantz (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge) and a single by Murn loaded the bases for the Brewers. After a strikeout, Clancy Philbrick (Stonington, CT/The Williams School) drew a bases-loaded walk to put his team up 10-9. Vassar would soon add an unearned run on a Skidmore error.

Philbrick picked up the save with a scoreless ninth, preserving Bubar's first career win. Murn paced the Brewers offensively with three hits, including a two run triple in the fourth. Glantz had an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run double in the third.

Ferri went 3-5 with three runs scored for Skidmore in the second game.

Vassar will host Stevens Tech on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
