SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (April 18, 2008) -- The Skidmore College baseball team extended its Liberty League win streak to eight with a 5-1 and 12-1 sweep of Vassar College, Saturday at Castle Diamond.
After losing there first six conference games, the defending Liberty League champions have bounced back to win eight straight league games for an 8-6 Liberty record and 16-9 overall mark. Vassar falls to 2-11 and 6-13.
Vassar hosts Skidmore on Sunday, April 19 in a doubleheader at noon.
In the first game Greg Carlow (Mystic, Conn.) had all three Skidmore hits, including a grand slam in the fifth. Thoroughbred freshman pitcher Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, N.J.) was perfect through three innings on the way to the complete game win. He allowed one unearned run on six hits, one walk, and one strikeout. Only two of Skidmore's 21 putouts came outside of the infield.
Vassar took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when
Clancy Philbrick (Stonington, Conn.) singled and advanced to second on an error. Philbrick moved to third on a
Zack Miller (San Francisco, Calif.) single and scored on an infield error.
Skidmore came right back in the fifth, scoring five runs on only one hit. Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) got hit with a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a passed ball. Justin Morelli (East Setauket, N.Y.) walked and advanced to second on a Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) sacrifice hit. Rob Rubenstein (Highland Park, N.J.) got hit to load the bases. Jeremy Goldman (Moraga, Calif.) executed the perfect suicide squeeze to score Ferri for a 1-0 lead. Adam Brown walked (Morrisonville, N.Y.) and Carlow drilled one over the fence in right-center for his fourth homer of the season.
Game two was all Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds battered Brewer pitching for 12 runs on 18 hits. Skidmore ace Ed Reilly (Tenafly, N.J.) improved to 3-2, allowing no runs, three hits, and seven strikeouts in six innings. Ferri was 4-5 with a triple and two doubles. Adam Cornachione (Klamath, Falls, Ore.) was 3-4 with a double and Matt Pisani (Winchester, Mass.) went 2-5 with a solo home run and a two-run single.
