ROCHESTER, NY (April 13, 2008) --
Tyler Bellstrom (Townshend, VT/Leland & Gray Union) scattered seven hits over 6.2 innings and
David Ringold (Seattle, WA/Ballard) hit a clinching home run in the sixth inning as Vassar College defeated the 19th-ranked University of Rochester, 7-6, in the second game of a doubleheader at Towers Field.
The Yellowjackets won the opener, 9-7, on the strength of four hits and three more RBIs from Jay Jay Vanderstyne (Victor, NY/Victor). Nate Stein (Greece, NY/Greece Odyssey) was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Matt Francis (Amherst, NY/Clarence) was 3 for 3.
Rochester is 21-4 overall, 13-1 in the Liberty League. Vassar is 6-11 overall, 2-9 with the game two win. The Vassar victory in the nitecap stopped a 14-game Rochester winning streak.
Vassar's
Nick Bell (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) earned the save in game two. He pitched 2.1 innings, yielding just a walk and striking out one. Rochester scored twice in the seventh to pull within 7-6 on an RBI double by Stein and a sac fly by Andy Cannon (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Twp.). After Bellstrom hit
Blayne Fuke (Kailua, HI/Mid-Pacific Inst.) with a pitch, Bell entered. He retired Ryan Sullivan (Hilton, NY/Hilton) on a flyball, then set down the Yellowjackets in order in the eighth.
In the ninth, Jim Bard (Grosse Isle, MI/Chesterton IN) walked and was sacrificed to second. Francis flied out and Cannon's hard liner to the left side was speared by
Joe Castilla (Weston, FL/Archbishop McCarthy) at short to end it.
Vassar took the lead for good, 4-2, in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by
Adam Murphy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood). The second run came home on an error. Rochester kept edging within one, but Vassar was able to tack on runs to maintain the lead.
The Yellowjackets stranded 13 men in game two, leaving the bases loaded in the first two innings. Vassar left 10 aboard -- the sacks full in the third and two in scoring position in the fifth.
In game one, Vanderstyne singled home one run in the third and two more in the fourth as the Yellowjackets pulled ahead. In the sixth, the lead went to 9-5 on an error and an RBI single by Francis. Vassar got within 9-7 in the seventh. A walk and two singles loaded the bases. Nick Cacciola (Northport, NY/Northport) relieved. He gave up an RBI single to Murphy (who was 4 for 4 in game one), then walked Castilla to force in another. He retired Ringwalkd on a fly to center and got
Ari Glantz (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Ridge & Latin) to hit into a fielder's choice to end it.
Steve Guzski (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) earned his second win of the season. He allowed eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings. All five Vassar runs were unearned.
