ROCHESTER, NY (April 12, 2008) -- Jay Jay Vanderstyne (Victor, NY/Victor) knocked in nine runs and had six hits to lead the University of Rochester to a 9-1, 22-1 baseball sweep of Vassar College at Towers Field this afternoon.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday in Rochester.
Vanderstyne was 3 for 4 with three RBIs in game one. He did not score a run. In the nitecap, he was 3 for 5 with four runs scored and six RBIs. Four runs came on a grand slam home run in the third inning. He added RBI doubles in the fifth and seventh innings.
Nate Stein (Greece, NY/Greece Odyssey) was 3 for 3 with three runs scored in the opener and 3 for 6 with five RBIS in the nitecap. Rochester had 12 hits in the opener and 20 hits in game two. The Yellowjackets batted around in three straight innings in game two – four, five, and six – when they totaled 16 runs.
Blair Veenema (Fairport, NY/Fairport) pitched a five-hitter in game one with one walk and seven strikeouts. He is 5-0. Pete McEneaney pitched the first seven innings of game two. He allowed three hits – none until
Mike Murn (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) doubled with two outs in the seventh.
Mike Plude (Shelton, CT/Notre Dame Catholic) singled and
Clancy Philbrick (Stonington, CT/The Williams School) hit an RBI single. McEneaney walked one, struck out seven, and allowed one earned run. He is 4-0.
Rochester improved to 20-3 overall, 12-0 in the Liberty League. The Yellowjackets are ranked 19th in the current Division III poll conducted by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Rochester has won 13 consecutive games.
Vassar is 5-10 overall, 1-8 in the Liberty League.
Alex Tanskey (Bedford, NY/Fox Lane) took the game one loss for Vassar. He allowed eight hits, eight runs (five earned), walked two, and struck out two.
Zack Miller (San Francisco, CA/Lick-Wilmerding) and
Ari Glantz (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Ridge & Latin) were both 2 for 3 for the Brewers.
Joe Castilla (Weston, FL/Archbishop McCarthy) had a sacrifice fly in the fifth to produce the Vassar run.
Dan Orme (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Ridge & Latin) pitched the first 3.2 innings of the second game. He allowed 10 hits, 11 runs (10 earned), and walked three. Rochester scored five more runs (one earned) on five hits off of
John Snyder (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).
Joe Bubar (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) worked the last three innings for Vassar.
Rochester scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings of game one. With one out and two on,
Blayne Fuke (Kailua, HI/Mid-Pacific Inst.) singled home a run. Dan Brien (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) reached on a throwing error to score Andy Cannon (LaGrange Park, IL/Lyons Twp.) and Vanderstyne doubled in two runs. In the fourth, Nick Cacciola (Northport, NY/Northport) and Stein singled. Matt Francis (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) reached on a throwing error that scored Cacciola. Cannon doubled in two runs and eventually scored on Vanderstyne's single.
In the nitecap, Vanderstyne's grand slam made it 4-0 in the bottom of the third. Stein singled in the fifth run. The Yellowjackets sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth. Brien hit a two-run home run and Stein had the first of his two-run triples.
