KINGSTON, NY (March 22, 2008) -- In a game not indicative of the score, Vassar's men's lacrosse team played gallantly in suffering an 11-3 loss to RPI, in the opening game of the Liberty League season, Saturday afternoon at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, NY. Now 1-6, 0-1 on the season, the Brewers look to get back into the winning column with a home game at Prentiss Field against Farmingdale State on Wednesday, March 26 at 4:00 pm. RPI, a perennially national power improves to 5-1, 1-0.
Despite being out shot during the game, the Brewers were not out worked and played one of its strongest Liberty League games since joining the league in 2000. The Red Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period, but Vassar was able to get on the scoreboard at 12:48 in the second stanza following a goal by sophomore midfielder Nick Cardillo (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit).
RPI struck back with two late second period goals to take a 5-1 lead into intermission. Following the break, the game turned for Vassar. Senior attackman Tristin Jemiolo (Poughkeepie, NY/Arlington) scored Vassar's second goal at the 8:04 mark, cutting the RPI lead to 5-2. Less than two minutes later, freshman midfielder Sam Seymour (Winchester, MA/Winchester) tightened the contest with a tally of his own that made the score 5-3.
RPI's relentless offensive attack and deep bench kicked into gear following Seymour's goal. The Red Hawks scored six unanswered goals, three of which came in the final two minutes of the third period to take a 8-3 lead into the fourth period. RPI tacked on three more goals to thwart any Vassar comeback en route to the 11-3 lead.
RPI got three goals from junior Mike Sampson (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington). Three other players added two goals.
Vassar's sophomore goalie Ed Pappo (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) made 12 saves in the game. RPI sophomore goalie Ryan DeJordy (Albany, NY/Columbia) made 8.
