POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 22, 2008) -- With three consecutive hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Vassar College baseball team broke a 1-1 tie en route to picking up a 2-1 win and a sweep of Baruch College in the second game of a 7-inning doubleheader at Marist College on Saturday. The Brewers won the first game 3-2 in eight innings, giving Vassar its first doubleheader sweep since the 2005 season.

The Brewers improve to 3-2 and travel to play Mt. St. Mary on Wednesday. Baruch drops to 1-7.

Game One
In the opener, the Bearcats jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run round-tripper over the right-field fence by senior Greg Polius (St. Mary's/Brooklyn, NY). However, Brewers starter Brian Sciubba (Wantagh, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) clamped down and held the Bearcats scoreless for the next seven innings, allowing just two more hits.

Vassar picked up a run in the second inning off sophomore Adam Murphy's (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) RBI single. The Brewers tied the game up in the fifth inning. Junior Zack Miller (San Francisco, CA/Lick-Wilmerding) got on base with a one-out single, advanced to second on a passed ball and reached third on a wild pitch. Freshman Joe Castilla (Weston, FL/Archbishop McCarthy) brought Miller home with a single to left-field.

Miller's base-running proved key in the winning run as well, as the Brewers managed to score a run on just one hit. Leading off in the bottom of the eighth inning, Miller singled up the middle. After advancing to second on Castilla's walk, Miller reached third on a passed ball. The speedy out-fielder then raced home on a wild pitch to score the winning run.

Sciubba picked up his first win of the season with a strong eight-inning performance. Sciubba allowed just two runs on just three hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. For the Bearcats, Jason Valentin (DeWitt Clinton, Bronx, NY) took the loss. Valentin pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

Miller led the Brewers, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Castilla went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Game Two
The second game was just as tightly fought as the first, as both teams had trouble bringing home runners. Baruch stranded eight runners, while Vassar left seven on base.

Following Brewer starter Tyler Bellstrom's (Townshend, VT/Leland & Gray Union) effort in the top half of the inning to escape a no-outs bases-loaded jam, the Brewer bats notched the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. A double-steal with junior Ari Glantz (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge& Latin) on first and freshman David Ringold (Seattle, WA/Ballard) on third scored Ringold to put the Brewers up 1-0. However, the Bearcats responded in the next inning on a Patrick Westrick (McKie Voc/Staten Island, NY) RBI double.

The Brewers picked up the winning run in the bottom of the sixth with three straight one-out singles from Clancy Philbrick (Stonington, CT/The Williams School), Joe Bubar (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day), and Adam Murphy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood). Murphy's deep single to center field plated Philbrick for what would prove to be the winning run.

Bellstrom pitched six innings to record his first win of the season, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Senior Nick Bell (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save, his first of the season. David Chestnut (Nazareth/Brooklyn, NY) took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Murphy led the Brewer bats, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
