Box Score

GENEVA, NY (February 8, 2008) -- Hobart's Tim Llewellyn connected on a jumper in the paint with 13 seconds to play to lead the Statesmen to a 57-56 win over Vassar's men's basketball team in Liberty League action Friday night. McHugh's bucket came only 16 seconds after Vassar's Tyson Brazell hit a 3-point shot off a Matt Nunn assist to push the Brewers ahead, 56-55. The loss drops Vassar to 14-4, 5-3, while Hobart creeps back into the Liberty League race at 9-10, 4-4.

The Brewers will face Hamilton College on Saturday at 4:00 pm. Both teams are 5-3 in league play heading into the game and are each coming off league losses.

Senior Lawrence Avitabile registered his 36th career double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) in the loss. No other Brewers player hit for double figures, with junior Matt Nunn (Gwynedd, PA) next with nine points and senior Tyson Brazell (Salt Lake City, UT) with eight points.

Hobart first-year guard Rob Estep (York,PA) notched team-highs with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Llewellyn finished with seven points, five assists, and first steals. First-year forward Michael Barlow (Phoenix, AZ) contributed eight points of the bench.

A tight contest from start to finish, neither team was able to pull away at any point. Vassar held the largest lead of the game, 13-5, at the 14:22 mark of the first half, and also had the largest lead of the second stanza, 35-29, at the 18:54 mark.

The Statesmen refused to give in, chipping away at the Brewers lead. Estep gave Hobart its first lead of the second half, 42-41, on a three-pointer. The lead seesawed back and forth over the final 11 minutes, changing hands four times in the time frame.

Brazell's 3-pointer from the right corner with 29 seconds to go, put the Brewers in front for the final time, 56-55, setting up Llewellyn's heroics.

With fouls to give, Vassar fouled Llewellyn near the top of the arc to slow Hobart down. Estep put the ball back in play with a pass to Llewellyn at midcourt. He drove down the right side of the lane, drew a triple team, and got off the winning shot, despite being fouled.

Llewellyn missed the free throw and then the Statesmen, with only five fouls against, fouled to slow down the Brewers. With just three seconds remaining, Vassar got off a hurried three, but the try missed its mark and Estep collected the carom to ice the victory.
