Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 6, 2008) – The Vassar College women's basketball team rode a career high 22 points from senior forward Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) and a season high 13 points from sophomore guard Carolyn Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) to its first win of the season, a commanding 60 - 30 victory over John Jay College on Saturday at the Athletics & Fitness Center. The win also represented Luke M. Ruppel's first victory as Vassar's head coach.

The Brewers improve to 1-4 on the season. Vassar hosts Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday in its final game of 2008. Following that game, the Brewers will not play again until January 6 and 7, when they will travel to Chicago, IL, for games against Elmhurst College and North Park University, respectively. The Bloodhounds drop to 1-5.

With three losses of less than four points this season, the Brewers ensured the game against the Bloodhounds would not go down to the wire, as they never trailed. Vassar showed its strength on defense, holding John Jay to just 14 percent shooting from the field and forcing 25 turnovers.

The Brewers established dominance quickly in the first half by going on a 13-1 run thanks to transition baskets and long-range shooting. Crampton capped off the run with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half by knocking down her first of two three pointers in the first frame from the right side of the arc. She finished the half with 10 of her 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the floor and 2-for-5 from behind the arc. Freshman guard Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA/Escondido) also finished the half in double-digits, scoring most of her 10 first-half points on fast-break baskets created by Bloodhounds turnovers on the other end. John Jay had 14 first half turnovers. Parks finished the game with 15 points, one shy of her career high. Haeuser scored six points in the first half but waited until the second half to really get going.

Haeuser was dominant in the second half, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds. Throughout the half, Haeuser established herself as a force down low in the paint. With just under 9:30 to go in the game, Hauser received an inbounds pass at the top of the key, missed a jumper, grabbed her own rebound and laid the ball in off the glass, giving Vassar a 50-23 lead. Then with 5:39 left in the half, sophomore Sarah Warner (Ipswich, MA/The Waring School) passed up an open three-point attempt and instead found Haeuser down low for the basket and the foul to put the Brewers up by 29 points. Haeuser was just one rebound shy of her fourth double-double of the season.

Vassar freshman Kristyn Tempora (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) grabbed a game high 10 rebounds for the Brewers.

Sophomore guard Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) led the Bloodhounds with eight points.
