The Brewers came out of the locker room to start the game with all engines firing, but quickly cooled off, failing to score a field goal for nearly 15 minutes. Sophomore
Carolyn Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading)# started the Brewers off with a three-pointer from the top o f the key, and freshman
Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA/Escondido) followed with a spin move in the lane to give Vassar a quick 5-0 lead in the first 45 seconds. However, following Parks' lay-up, Vassar failed to hit a field goal, and scored just four free throws, until an offensive put-back from junior
Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) with 4:19 to play in the half broke the drought.
After facing an early 7-2 deficit, the Lyons quickly responded and never looked back. An Erin Cain (Quincy, MA/Fontbonne Academy) lay-up with 13:06 left in the half gave the Lyons a 10-9 lead and Mt. Holyoke held the advantage for the remainder of the game. A Cain baseline jumper off a Mt. Holyoke inbounds play gave the Lyons a 20-9 lead with 7:33 remaining in the half. From this point on, the Brewers were unable to cut the Lyons' lead to single digits.
In the first half, the Brewers shot 3-for-22 from the floor and entered the locker room down 24-11.
Although Vassar was outscored by Mt. Holyoke just 23-21 in the final frame, the first half deficit proved too great to come back from as the Brewers never got closer than 12 in the last 20 minutes.
Vassar freshman
Kristyn Tempora (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) notched her first career double-double in the loss, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Haeuser grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with nine points and three steals. No other Brewer scored more than five points.
Freshman Christine Chancy (Bay Harbor Island, FL/Miami Country Day School) led the Lyons with a double-double, scoring 12 points, and grabbing an impressive 12 rebounds at the height of 5-3. Cain chipped in with ten points, six rebounds and five steals. Katie Austen (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai) added eight points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Emma Washauer (Mill Valley, CA/Tmalpais) scored seven.
