Nola Solomon (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) the Vassar women's soccer team scored two goals late in the first half and held on to pick up its second consecutive Liberty League victory with a 2-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday at Renwyck Field.
With the win, the Brewers improve to 6-3-0 overall, including a 2-1 mark in Liberty League play. Vassar hosts St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Monday at 4:00 pm in its final regular season home game of the season. The loss drops the Red Hawks to 5-5-0 on the season (0-3 Liberty).
The Brewers opened the scoring in the 39th minute, sparked by junior Anna Robinson's (Toronto, ON/Havergal College) cross. Solomon tipped the cross to freshman
Alix Zongrone (Spartanburg, SC/Dorman) who headed home her second goal of the season to give the Brewers a lead they would not relinquish.
Solomon extended Vassar's to 2-0 in the 45th minute as her shot deflected off of a Rensselaer defender into the net. Sophomore
Allison McManis (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) delivered the corner to the middle of the 18 for Solomon, who trapped the ball down and finished.
After being out-shot 9-3 in the first half, Rensselaer picked up the pace offensively in the second, equaling the Brewers second half total of 13 attempts on goal.
The Red Hawks best opportunity to score came in the 59th minute, when a freshman Catherine Harvey (Portland, OR/Liberty) header clanked squarely off the post. Harvey and classmate Alexandra Fontanetta (Neshanic Station, NJ/Moutn Saint Mary Academy) each finished with a team-high four shots.
Solomon, who scored the second Brewers' goal and an assisted on the first, also led the team with six shots. McManis finished the game with an assist and was second with five shot attempts.
Vassar senior goaltender
Anne Hutchinson (St. Pete Beach, FL/Tampa Preparatory) earned the shutout, making four save. She is now 6-3-0 having started every game for the Brewers. White, who made four stops, falls to 4-5-0.
